Besides dave writeing 4 songs for kill em all and 2 songs for ride the lighting. I"ve noticed that the speed went down after every cd. Plus they sold out with the sm cd and load and reload. Whats your opnion on this?

Sold out on S&M?.. Nah, S&M was just some special event, KISS did the same, and I think Deep Purple & Guns N' Roses as well if I remember right. It was just their old songs with an orchestra in the background, to give it a more dynamic feel and output. Dave as far as I know can only truly claim Mechanix as his, the other members still had their share in the other songs while he was with them.

I wouldn't say Metallica is overrated, since their work from the 80's deserves it's praise. Besides, alot of people these days are bashing Metallica anyway, if their praising them.. then it's only them praising their old work, not the Metallica of today.

I agree about the speed part, but while more and more songs became a little slower, they still remained very technical. Course, if there's anyone to blame.. it's Bob Rock for completely changing Metallica, even though I really like Black Album... It's just alittle hard to imagine them going from "Hit The Lights" to "Mama Said"... ya know?

Most bands have done a "sellout" stunt at least once in their career. Megadeth did it with Risk, Metallica did it with Black, they all do it.. And they mainly only do it to gather a wider audience, and to keep their image alive/fresh. Take Slayer for example, they've stuck to the same stuff since the beginning but yet aren't as popular as Megadeth & Metallica, there wasn't any variety with their music.

But I would have to say that those who truly aren't sellouts, are the ones who play their music non-professionally, and do it as a hobby.

I dont have a beef with metallica. I am a big fan on there old stuff but there new stuff sucked you got to atleast admit that. In my opnion when cliff died metallica died. Black and sm and load and reload were metallicas sell out cds.

Their newer stuff is fine to me, there's actually some really good tracks on Load and especially Reload.

Though Cliff died, even if he were still here.. S&M would've probably been inevitable, especially since Cliff was a huge fan of classical music, and even played the piano.

Metallica is clearly capable of producing another Ride The Lightning even without Cliff, as they've proven with And Justice For All, they only changed their ways thanks to Bob Rock, because they knew if they stuck to their 80's material, they wouldn't have survived the 90s.

Megadeth did the same...

Re: Metallica overated?

Yeah but megadeth still made the music good. I mean old metallica stuff is probbly a tie with the old megadeth. But the new megadeth stuff beats the new metallica stuff.

Edit - Fade to black probbly was a sign that they were goona sell out down the road.

... Why would Fade to Black be a sign of them selling out?

Re: Metallica overated?

Cause its like there slowest song beafore black and load and reload?

.. not really. The song has some slow moments, but has really fast moments as well... much like alot of the songs on Master Of Puppets, and Justice For All. Master of Puppets being considered one of the greatest metal albums of all time... Fade to Black being a sign of selling out because it's "slower" doesn't really make any sense, The Thing That Should Not Be, and To Live Is To Die has plenty of slow moments in them, but are major fan-favorites.

Fade to Black and the Load album... Fade to Black still had their old sound, where as most of the songs on Load had a Country/Blues/Hard Rock sound to them, with just a bit of heaviness to them to make them still seem like a Heavy Metal band. That would be considered selling out, not because they had slow parts in a song, but because their sound had completely changed.

So your admiting they did sell out?

Just because people dont stick with the same music year after year and create new sounds in their own style doesnt mean they sold out however in the sense that they did it selfishly they did to keep selling records. Its called evolving their sound and trying new things to keep them entertained. After so long in the business dont you think they would be tired just reeling out the same sounding stuff year after year? They make music as a way to express themselves but they also need to keep mixing things up every now and again to keep people interested and keep selling their music and getting new fans interested.

By society's definition of "selling out" yes, Metallica did it for all the reasons one would sell out. They only did it, because they wanted to survive the next decade of the music industry, and the longer you survive in the business, the more money you make. Now that they went and did it, they're multi-millionaires and can now do whatever they want with their music, and not give a care financially.

^^ Drakan is right also, from the looks of their upcoming album, it looks like Metallica is trying to make up for their 90's material and get back into their old stuff. Especially since Bob Rock has been thrown out this time.

Re: Metallica overated?

I wished they disbanded instead of selling out. I dont how people can like sell outs.

Simple, as long as the music is still good to alot of the fans, they'll remain active. people kept buying their albums even after they "sold out", because they still liked some of the music.

Funny enough, after the release of St. Anger, alot of the fans who hated Load & Reload are now loving Load & Reload, as if to say the terrible sound of St. Anger helped made Load & Reload sound even better than before. Some fans didn't even give those two albums a chance, but are now going back to it and starting to like it.

Yeah but at the cost of loseing the old fans aka thier true fans.

Re: Metallica overated?

The way I see it, a "true fan" is one who sticks with you all the way.. not one who abandons you midway because you wanted to try something "different".

Re: Metallica overated?

This is an example of a typical new metallica fan whoes cliff burton?

The ones who hate Metallica because they did something different, and beg for their old material.. are the equivalent of a child who's crying and whining about what he wants, like getting a new toy and he goes "Wah! I don't want that stupid toy! I want something else, you suck!"

All I can say, is if your favorite band won't return to their old ways. Then find another band, instead of moping and crying about it and hating on them because they aren't doing what you want. There's plenty of other bands out now that are just as good as classic Metallica, besides Anthrax or Megadeth. Iced Earth, Testament, and Venom are good examples and substitutes... and are even legends at that as well.
