Modern Warfare 2 to Lead Xmas Price Hike in the UK

Written Thursday, July 16, 2009 by Dan Webb

Activision confirmed to MCV today that Modern Warfare 2 will carry a recommended retail price of £54.99 in the UK when it drops this November because of the weakening of the pound and increased development costs.

THQ's Executive Vice President of worldwide publishing, Ian Curran, stated that the "exchange rates between the Euro and the pound are making it very difficult for publishers to show an acceptable operating margin in the UK."

"You can’t continue to trade as normal when the biggest territory in Europe has seen cost of goods increase by 30 per cent due to the strengthening of the Euro. Publishers somehow need to offset this drastic increase in costs. I’m not surprised to see the [Modern Warfare 2] SRP go up and I feel this will continue across more key titles."

The news is surely going to affect sales in this current economic crisis and retailers are even suggesting that other publishers will follow suit. EA however have told MCV that they won't be raising prices.

Despite the Activision statement, the price hike may not be that drastic with UK e-tailers - Play, Amazon, GAME, Gamestation - all listing the price around £45 with ShopTo listing it at £42.99.

Will the recent hike in price put you off a day one purchase?

I will merely find somewhere that does it for a reasonable price. Everyone in this country blames the economic crisis for price hikes but infact its merely an excuse to overcharge us for goods. Lots of places will lower prices so they get more sales than the people selling it for that price, its quite simple. Day one purchase for me but it wont be at that price.

well infinity ward you brought this on yourselves... logging onto www.mininova.com searching for illegal download of modern warfare 2 on pc.

No not really ill probably buy it later into the year let it lower in price or buy it for a bargain somewhere. No matter what a game should only retail at the maximum price of £40 excluding special versions of the games. but either way there still gonna be bought a lot of hardcore call of duty fans are going to be on this game like bread and butter.

Stupid recession crap... well at least when i leave college and then university like in 2-6 years time the recession should be fixed.

Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition is a Pricey HMV Exclusive in the UK

Written Tuesday, July 21, 2009 by Dan Webb

GamesIndustry.biz are reporting that HMV have snagged the exclusive rights for Modern Warfare 2's Prestige Edition in the UK.

The Prestige Edition includes Night Vision Goggles with a "Soap" bust, an art book and an Arcade version of the original Call of Duty title, but it doesn't come cheap. It comes in at a staggering £119.99.

Too rich for your blood? Or are the lure of those NVGs too much to handle? I'm still undecided.

Check out the Prestige Edition video below if you missed it last time. Modern Warfare 2 ships November 10th, 2009.

Too rich for your blood? That gave me an idea, now I know how I can pay for it without feeling like I just paid for a prostitute...

Nearly £120 for a game is crazy, unless it came with nothing short of a real firearm i will be purchasing the normal edition (or Limited Edition if they make one with some decent bonuses). Night Vision Goggles are intriguing but if i wanted a pair id have already purchased them.

I paid £150 for the band package of Guitar Hero IV. I was lucky it was that cheap too because it had a £30 price reduction on the first day.

If these NVGs are the real deal, I'll be happy to pay for this.

when i start working and my mom starts giving me £30 a week pocket money then i might start to consider these prices, but unless we win the lottery or i find a time machine that is not happening

What has happened to this industry? Once upon a time there was something called games, games were long and offered hours of fun, there was also this thing called expansion packs, they offered a lot of extra content......

This day today games are what expansions were a few years ago, and expansions are small patches....
