Molyneux makes Dimitri "discovery"

Peter Molyneux has recently been speaking (vaguely) about his secret project (Dimitri).

CVG said:
Peter Molyneux has made a 'significant discovery' during the development of the ever-elusive Dimitri, a "game" he's been drip-teasing the development of since 1999.

"Since Black & White, we've been thinking a lot about AI," he said in an interview with Gamers Global.

"Lionhead was founded with that thought of AI in mind. In terms of the core or the theory of the AI, we've moved from Black & White onto a project called Dimitri, which I've been tantalising you about for a long time. And that team kept on researching. Dimitri was always an experimental thing, which is why I never showed it.

"And then it moved from that experiment to a moment in time that happened six months ago when a discovery was made, and this discovery has been so exciting that it has lead to Lionhead focusing on it and sculpting a game around that.

"I think that discovery is so significant," the Lionhead boss added. "This discovery has led us to start a game and that game will be on the front cover of Nature magazines and Science magazines."

Back in 2005 Molyneux told CVG that Dimitri was, "about you. It allows anyone who plays the game to relive their life, their entire individual life. That's a pretty ambitious concept."

But it's OK, Microsoft PR department - apparently he's saying "absolutely nothing" about Dimitri, despite erm, already having done so.

"I've been sat down in a room by the head of PR and been told to not talk about it," he said. You can't teach an old dog new tricks...

Yeah it does sound very ambitious indeed, however id expect nothing less from the mind of Peter Molyneux.

I think they actually found out how to make AI learn.

Once I made a small guy who walked around in a desert... he discovered that he died of thirst, so when his thirst-variable got high, he searched for water and drank it....

Not really a learning AI, but still, I didnt program him to drink! If he would never get thirsty, he would not ever, never develop that behaviour.

And thats where games are going. AI developing to how you fight, where you use to run and so on. Its been around for quite some time, but I really, really hope that Dmitri succeeds in making an adaptable/learning AI. "We got the technology"... hehe

Adaptable and constantly learning AI would be a massive breakthrough in games. The Euphoria engine uses the self preservation AI that looks like it learns about the best ways to survive certain things. Such as grabbing something heavy when they are being lifted in the air (Force Unleashed style). I think these types of AI will be the next huge breakthrough in gaming.

Already AI is smarter than us. I wouldn't think to grab something heavy, I'd think "HOLY ****ING **** AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH."

How did you do thast

Re: Molyneux makes Dimitri "discovery"

Force Unleashed seems to have kinda a learning AI as DD said. i wish the AI in Gears coul learn not to run out in the middle of crossfire and get killed time after time. or not to go into the darkness
