To post in this thread, you must take the following oath silently. I am agreeing to it here and now (since I've got a reputation with some of you when it comes to music)

I solemnly swear that should I choose to disclose my feelings about a particular music genre, I will do so civilly. I will proclaim a genres superiority with the full understanding that it is only my opinion, and will read the posts of others with this assumedly implied.

tl;dr i'm the one who's most at fault for it so i'll go ahead and say it. i'll be civil, i won't slander, and i'll even let you sit in the front seat. good?

which music genres do you prefer and why?
which genres can you simply not understand (I will not say hate), and why?

Example: I prefer classic rock in the vein of Creedance Clearwater Revival and Led Zeppelin because its a safe listen. It grazes deep south type music while maintaining some integrity. When I turn it on, I have a clear understanding for what I'm going to hear. Put short, there are no surprises and its an easy, liberating listen.

I don't understand why people enjoy country music. When I listen to it I hear my classic rock stripped of what I love most about it: noise, attitude, and variance. While neither genre varies much, at least Led Zeppelin can turn out songs like Tangerine and Immigrant on the same album (Creedance has Bad Moon Rising and Long as I Can See the Light). Country/Western seems to vary even less and the singing style gets on my nerves.

I like melodic death metal. It's not at all just screams and growls about death, supported by bashing drums and raging guitars (that's just death metal). It is actually ifluenced by the more melodic genres, to make good sounding harmonies that often also consist of strings, choirs and piano. Some of the songs are so nice that they feel epic-it's hard to explain. Furthermore, there are sometimes some progressive elements which make for even more variety, consisting of odd time signatures, unexpected chords, change of theme and such. Also, as I said, the lyrics aren'tjust about death , darkness and doom. I actually like how they sing-or should I say 'vocalize'-about things far less superficial than that which is considered mainstream. It's also deep, so the itnerprettion is up to you, but the meaning isn't too hard to find out. They sketch a surreal world, that doesn't make sense at first glance, to tell you about a a lot of different things.

I don't understand the point in rap music. To me, it's simply a beat with minimum melody, and someone talking over it. Granted, screaming and growling isn't much like singing either (even though proper vocalists can be understood), but at least it's not as boring and monotonous.

I like punk, metal, rock... anything fast with guitars and a decent beat. And there are some exceptions for other genres... but they have to be really good. You know, like Friday or something :troll:

I like to think I have a fairly open mind about music. Every genre I like or have atleast tried to like. Good way to describe my music taste is random.

Funny quote from a friend whilst having a similar discussion,"Jeez, you're like the musical Jesus or somethin'!" I think what she meant by this is that I haven't got any actual hate for any genre - or I'm just wonderfully, magically talented. :troll:

Heavy metal is something I've tried to atleast kind of like, but with little success.
Rap on the other hand, I don't dislike or like, sometimes it's hard to resist the beat... =]
Country, I don't mind either. I have a Taylor Swift and a Lady Antebellum album in my collection, so I guess that means I like it(?)

Every so often I find myself dancing to a song and I think to myself, "Good..god." But if a song's catchy, I tend to like it.

A few days ago I was asked by someone if I had to pick any song as my favourite --only one-- and for what ever reason, I blurted this out. ^_^

Any music made in the '60s can't be bad. I think it is scientifically proven. Also, I dare you all to not dig this

I dared to dislike it, not knowing what it was, since I actually don't like a lot of the old stuff. Only a few of those are good. And Safety Dance is good.

I enjoy jazz, funk and Blues mostly, but I dont mind elements from most other genre's.

A selection from my musical tastes:

Dazed and Confused

Take Five

30,000 Pounds of Bananas

But... that... isn't... very... good. :/

You clearly have terrible musical taste, and as such your opinion should not be valid. :troll:

By the way cheez; how about Lynryd Skynryd? The perfect blend of country and rock.
i don't mind the Skynyrd to be honest. i only know the major hits... sweet home, simple man, etc.
i think that the main reasons i'm not more than neutral about them is for reasons outside of their music.

on a semi-related note: does anyone here like Niel Young?

Anything that's rock usually sits well with me. Metal can be alright as long as it's not that super heavy death metal kind of stuff, but I listen to very little of it.

Somebody please say they like The Strokes...

Erm...I usually just listen to anything in the rock genre that was written before the 2000's. I enjoy a lot of 60's and 70's songs and even a few 50's songs. I mainly listen to rock because it has a laid back free spirit feel to it, I never worry about anything when I listen to it (which is ideal considering I spend a great deal of my life worrying myself sick, so for me music provides a release.) As for country music I don't mind it occasionally, I don't know whether to class him as country or rock (I'm no expert, this I humbly admit) but I really enjoy listening to Johnny Cash, that guy was really something else.

One of my favourites:

Also good songs, more from the rock genre:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZis9VgpY74&feature=channel_video_title Guess who- American woman (always reminds me of the club scene from the second Austin Powers film :D.)

which music genres do you prefer and why?

By now I think I'm pretty much used to what different people like. In here it's only repeated (once more). I still just want to know, why do you like that genre? I know I like melodic death metal, but I also provided an explanation. I thought it was the point of this thread to figure out why people do, or don't like certain music. :P (well then, maybe it isn't...). I can listen to the music you like, sure, but I still won't understand which particular elements, in which configuration make you like it. =|

I'm very curious. ^_^
