So. SOPA, PIPA and ACTA. Heard of those? Well, so have Anonymous and they're now threatening to "shut down the internet" in protest of them.
COMPUTER WORLD UK said:
Hacker group Anonymous has been threatening since February to"shut the internet down" by launching a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDOS) on Saturday (31 March). The attack will target the world's 13 DNS servers so that Internet users will be unable to perform domain name lookups, thus temporarily disabling the Internet.

COMPUTERWORLD UK said:
However this seems unlikely because Anonymous has never offered any evidence that is capable of generating enough traffic to flood the root servers, which are massively over-provided with bandwidth. In addition, Anonymous is unlikely to explain to the world how it is going to perform an attack beforehand.
COMPUTERWORLD UK said:
Anonymous is believed to be protesting in retaliation to 25 of its members being arrested last month, the arrests of six prime members from Lulzsec this month, the downfall of Megauploadand the continued threats of SOPA, PIPA and ACTA.

Thoughts? lulz?

I came for the naughty, but I'm staying for th Dethklok. Also, those guys are idiots. Saving the internet by annoying thousands of people by shutting stuff down? That's just as retarded as the stuff they are protesting against.

It'll be a fail. If they couldn't take down amazon.com, they can't take down 13 DNS servers. I don't know much, but I'm operating under the assumption that the DNS servers require much and more traffic to shut down. Whichever anon came up with this is a complete moron. They're just crying wolf now. The days where they had any shock value are over. It's just gonna be one failed DDoS attack after another now.

I'm also surprised, yet again, at how badly reporters handle any story relating to anonymous or internet culture.
"Anonymous has never offered any evidence that it is capable of generating enough traffic to flood the root servers...?" If the reporter had an inkling of understanding of what anonymous is, they would have reported that the number of people within anonymous who will be performing the attack is uncertain. No person in Anonymous has any true understanding of how many people are actually a part of it, or how many partake in the activist side of things. If there were an elite group that tracked those statistics and organized activist activities, then that phrasing might have worked. But in that case, those individuals would probably have already been arrested. In any case, people need to start doing their homework before they publish.
