Need major help - No spade on treasure island of doom

I sold heaps of the junk in my inventory this morning and now I can't find my spade. I didn't think I'd need one when I came to do this quest, and now my dog is digging next to the tree and it won't let me dig there. I can't leave the island and I need major help!!!

The only thing you can do is reload the quest, buy a spade, and do it again.

Why wouldn't you need a spade on a Pirate Treasure Island?
