NeverDead's combat system will have an ability system and XP. Players will gain XP during a fight and can spend points earned to obtain new abilities. As you might've noticed, immortality and dismemberment is the core focus of the game, so you'll have abilities such as self-dismemberment, which will allow you to rip off your own limbs and throw them at enemies for both offensive and defensive purposes. Rip off your arm and toss it to distract enemies away from your position, or decapitate yourself and toss your head to a higher spot in an area to scope it out. You also have an ability called dismember explosion that causes dismembered limbs to go boom. Your free arm or leg is now a bomb that you can toss and detonate. These are the only two Nojiri would discuss so far, but says there will be more abilities to use related to dismemberment in this combat-focused game. He mentioned the ability to use guns and a special sword as well, but didn't get into much detail.
Nojiri says NeverDead was partly inspired by Highlander the movie from an immortality angle. He says he wants to give players a unique gameplay experience that will change your way of thinking. While most games require you to avoid hazards, NeverDead makes you jump in head first. Most characters would try to avoid a falling ceiling whereas Bryce would run right under it.
While watching the trailers, players might take away that the game is fairly humorous, but Nojiri says the game is far more serious than it looks. For now Bryce seems to be a bit of a meathead, but Nojiri says we'll soon see a more serious side of him in upcoming trailers. Not to say the game will be completely serious, there will be some humor in dialogue as well as through a side character.
The most curious thing about NeverDead, however, is the concept of failure. If Bryce cannot die, is there a "Game Over"? During segments with Arcadia, it's important to keep her alive. Her doom is your failure. She isn't with you throughout the entire game however, so while Nojiri says there will be some sort of failure in the game during solo sections, he won't say what it is quite yet.
