Can anyone find a source for this online? I want modern social norms, not those of 300 years prior to now.

If you must know, I have a Final Presentation due Friday for Anthropology that I have yet to start until now...I'm doing the differences between New England (obviously) and Ireland. (My brother told me to do this, he likes the idea of living/visiting Ireland and such)

I mean, I know I live there and all, but I wanted to just make it more official, and I don't really know half of the social norms we probably have. That's what happens when you enjoy living under a rock :)

To be honest, saying "Social Norms" covers an extremely broad area and unless you want to be presenting for a good couple of hours (or days), I'd narrow it down. Do you want to cover just those inspired by religion? Or those that are present in each social group or clique out there? How about those created by the government? Or those that are brought in by immigrants and disseminated to the "natives" of the land? Then there's also those involving food and eating...or sports...

Especially since you're comparing norms from two different countries, limiting what you actually compare to maybe 3-5 specific things would be better.

Social Norms really isn't that broad. Like, what's appropriate to do or how to act in any kind of situation. I find it hard to believe that it'd take days to cover that. I just want relative things. I think you're thinking a lot deeper than I was intending anyone to do. Because, yeah, I'm going to go through every social group found in New England and all our gangs and the 7 people of Native descent and each food we eat and how you should eat it and every school and every government party we house. Yeah, becuase that's really what I wanted to talk about. >.<

I was thinking things like, how they speak to each other, how they greet, how they treat people in certain situations. Personal and Group Codes of Ethics and such. Pretty much what this site covers.

I guess I was ignorant since that site is titled "Culture and Social Norms" so I thought that was all there was to it. Sorry :/

Well, being an anthropologist myself I was just going on what I know. You didn't give me any restrictions so I didn't know what exactly you wanted to cover and whatnot. No need to apologize though, all is well!

That's a nifty site for immersing oneself when in Ireland; I like it. It's more of a sampler though, as the deeper culture and norms still probably won't be known to a tourist unless they stay for an extended period of time, say many weeks or months. It doesn't cover every situation, just the most likely that will pop up when visiting, which makes sense.

This is a good way to do it. It will just apply to the general population though, as not all people obviously do the same thing; some avoid it purposely, some live different and where it's not allowed...etc.

Scratch balls when standing around doing nothing? That sort of thing?

Ugh, well, I'm not an Anthropologist, I'm just taking the class, regardless of the fact that I like it...for the most part.
Well then, I'll apologize for the b!tchy post. Sorry, I was in a mood. >)

Yeah, I know it's pretty basic, which is why I'm about to go look for something more. But that's basically what I'm looking for. :)

Well, of course it doesn't apply to everyone, like I think a lot of people around where I live are rude and/or inconsiderate. So, there's clearly a difference in "social norms" here. But yeah, just, general, simple things. No need to get all deep into anything specific. It's just a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation anyway. >)

Yes...stuff like that...exactly. :)...
Nah, that above :)

Edit: I guess I like smileys :)
