Konami is reviving its classic Contra series with the help of BlazBlue developer Arc System Works, although the developer is ditching the classic 'Contra' moniker.

Hard Corps: Uprising is currently being developed for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, bringing back the classic run n' gun gameplay that the series defined when the first entry launched in 1987.

Although it drops the Contra name, the Hard Corps title is a dead giveaway, following on from the 1994 Mega Drive title Contra: Hard Corps. If it's anything like the predecessor, this is going to be one of the hardest games around today. The new anime art style is a colourful feast for the eyes as well.

Ahead of its E3 reveal, an IGN preview suggests that this is the same Contra fans know and love. There's over the top weapons, returning characters and tons of aliens to blast, but we're also expecting screen-filling bosses that soak up bullets like a sponge.
