According to Bethesda's Todd Howard who has on many occasions stated that Bethesda were originally going to wait for the next generation to release Skyrim but abandoned those plans as the consoles were still capable of a lot more.

In an interview with PSM3 magazine they asked him how long it would be in his opinion before we were to see the new wave of consoles being released and he said the following...

I think it's going to be a while still, I really do. I think consumers are happy with the current ones, there's a lot you can do with them. So I don't think it's coming next year or the year after. Conversations over moving the title to next-gen consoles were "very serious".

"We wanted [Skyrim] to be fresh. We don't want it to feel, visually or technically, 'Oh this is Fallout 3' or 'this is Oblivion' And if we couldn't do that we would have waited.

If history were to repeat itself, now would be the usual time to release a new console for each company. But things are different now, PS3 has recently broken out of its slump of crap and doing excellent, and Xbox 360 has a new life extension with Kinect for the casual market. Nintendo is continuing the console release time pattern but that's mostly due to them effing up with the original Wii.

Plenty of life still left in these consoles, and I'm not yet looking forward to spending over $300 on a new system anytime soon.

Great news, I won't have to go get another extra summer job for a new system. That being said, I need to get an extra job for the games for these current systems, $60... Damn.

With titles like Skyrim and Battlefield 3 showing that the consoles still pack a decent punch im not surprised.

I'd like to put off the next generation of consoles for way more than two years. Like Gikoku said, we can still get a lot out of the current ones, and don't have a bunch of cash to spend on a new Xbox. There are several other things I'm spending money on first (like repairing my current Xbox), so I hope we don't see the new consoles for quite a while.

Yeah and the people that spent money on Kinect and Move would feel pretty annoyed if a new console came out straight away unless it was compatible for the new one.

People should be annoyed they spent money on Kinect and Move at all - one requires you to wave your arms around like a windmilling idiot and the other has glowing balls on the end. Which look stupid.

Yea, definitely, and I haven't even bought Kinect yet. I'm still waiting for The Journey and Kinect Star Wars. I'm sure the next consoles will be compatible with Kinect and Move though. I'd be shocked if they weren't.

Rumour has it that they will be the building blocks of the next consoles. However sources have also said that Microsoft have been testing technology on Kinect that surpasses what is currently available. Making me wonder if it will be improved by a mere update in the future or by that time they will create a new (better) Kinect device.

I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to pull something like that and for owners of the original to flock to it with open wallets, folks can be pretty damn silly.
