Oblivion or Fallout 3?

Oblivion and Fallout 3 are both really fantastic games. Both games have earned my 'favorites' list. But I would like to know why everyone loves fallout 3 (more) over oblivion.

Which one do you like better/prefer? I would like to know because I think Fallout 3 is a bit overrated when compared to Oblivion.

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

hmm that's a tough one. both won game of the year...

my breakdown is this: fallout 3 definitely has less depth, which gives it more mass appeal for easy access fun. for me oblivion was much more rewarding for being so much more complex.
oblivion requires the player to invest in the game and learn all of it's systems so it takes the cake.

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

Seeing as how they're both the same game, and personal preference would have to come down to the differences in setting and story (at least for me). I much preferred the setting in Fallout 3 to Oblivion (I just got a bit tired of high fantasy after Lord of the Rings). I couldn't get into it as much as I liked though, because unlike Oblivion, I didn't feel that anywhere was a safe place to chill (weird excuse, I know). I know Megaton, etc, was pretty safe, but I couldn't get around without exposing myself to ****ed up nuclear baddies, and I didn't like that one bit.

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

I preferred Fallout 3 because it had a more refined combat system and the combat never got boring, the VATS system is genius. I actually didnt like the idea on paper but when i used it i thought it was superb. Fallout 3 was also less glitchy than Oblivion and varied the quest types a little more. However Oblivion was a deeper game with more to do.

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

I wouldn't call Oblivion deeper, just wider. Oblivion quests were either go here, kill this, or go here and get this, or both. It was big, but not deep.

Dark Brotherhood quests were quite unique though.

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

I prefer Oblivion to Fallout but that's largely because I am more drawn to fantasy epic type stuff than post-apocalyptic carnage. Plus Three Dog got on my nerves something chronic...

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

Fallout 3, no doubt.

  • I like the Fallout universe a lot more than the Elder Scroll one. Super Mutants and Ghouls are a lot more interestning than stereotypical Ogres and Zombies.
  • Guns>Bows
  • V.A.T.S is sweet.
  • The entire Fallout "theme", like skill names/descriptions are very charming and captured quite well in Fallout 3.

Yeah, they were my favourite part of Oblivion, but (with the exception of that one where you have to fake the dudes death) they're still all go here and kill this.

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

I liked the skill system in FO3. I especially loved perks. I usually spend like 20 minutes after leveling up trying to decide which perk to pick.

IMO, the combat in oblivion is wack. I'm waiting for the new version of deadly reflex to come out. hopefully it will make combat more fun

Re: Oblivion or Fallout 3?

^Deadly Reflex sux so badly.

Oblivion is better than Fallout 3. I prefer swords and stuff. I love the cheats <3 Modding my char to 100%, ahhhh... I miss the days.
