Official Crysis Thread

I was flipping through my GamePro magazine last night and noticed an article on the new game Crysis. I ended up reading the entire article, and by the end of it was completely blown away. That is what this little guide is based on.

Set in the year 2020, this stunning PC shooter drops you straight into the action when, after a short battle with some North Koreans, you band together to fight War of the Worlds-type aliens who have just exited the meteor you were sent to investigate. A battle ensues, and you make your way to the alien ship. Upon entering, you come face to face with more aliens, only this time in Zero-G.

So far, this game sounds like your average mid-budget SciFi thriller. It's not. Four things seperate this game from the competition.
  • The graphics are amazing
  • The A.I. is actually intelligent
  • The Nanosuit(think Master Chief's MJOLNIR armor, only 10 times lighter and more advanced)
  • It might be coming to PS3 and/or Xbox 360(see Dark Drakan's thread on this topic)
So with those four things in mind, let us enter Crysis.

The Suit
One of the coolest factors in Crysis is no doubt the Nanosuit. Not only can you allocate energy to certain extra functions, which will be listed below, but you can also modify your weapons, with each one having numerous slots for modifications. For instance, you can place a silencer or rifle scope onto the Assault Rifle.
If you are getting tired of having to scramble to find those precious healthpacks before you drop dead, then look no more. Crysis' Nanosuit takes after Master Chief's armor in that your defense system recharges itself, so you only need to find some cover(instead of scarcely placed healthpacks) to stay alive.
The 4 armor functions are 1. Extra Armor, 2. Increased Strength, 3. Massively Increased Speed, and 4. Cloaking Effects.
With the increased Strength and Speed, you now have the ability to sprint at amazing speeds, jump onto rooftops, punch through walls, and lift and throw heavy objects.
The other two pretty much explain themselves.

5 Questions
1. Won't I need a friggin super-computer to run this thing?
Crysis will be the first native Windows Vista game that uses DirectX 10. Despite this, Crytek(the company making the game) and EA Games are taking extra time to make sure the game is compatible with Windows XP and DirectX 9. So rest assured, you can play this game on a 2- or 3-year old setup. Even in DX9 mode, this game outshines Gears of War. This game has to be the best-looking PC game I've ever seen(take a look at the water effects in the trailers listed below).

2. What can I expect to do on the missions?
Being made by the same people responsible for the extremely popular FarCry, this game is amazingly open-ended. Come in Master Chief style, assault rifle blazing, grenades flying, rockets exploding, or take a more subtle approach, sneaking around like a Tom Clancy game. Each level will have a certain objective, but how you complete this goal is entirely up to you.
3. What am I gonna use to blow these alien's brains out??
Another main aspect of Crysis is the weapons. So far, the guns known to be included are a standard Assault Rifle, a Rocket Launcher, Shotgun, SMG, Electromagnetic Rifle(sounds like fun), frag/smoke/flash grenades, grenade launcher, C4 explosives, claymore mines, and of course anti-tank mines. As an added bonus, you can call in air strikes, spot enemies with binoculars, use North Korean weapons, or go all Chuck Norris on them fools.
4. What's with the aliens?
Crytek hasn't said much about the aliens appearing in the game. Based on the video and screenshots, they seem to be similar to the aliens in War of the Worlds. Upon your first encounter, in open air on the island, they're enclosed in combat vehicles, but when you next meet them, this time in thier Zero-G spaceship environment, you'll have more direct interaction with them.

5. What about multiplayer??
Again, Crytek hasn't said a great deal about the multi-player aspect of Crysis, but you will be allowed to play in 32-player battles. So far, only three multi-player modes are known. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are both standard multi-player frag-fests, while the third variant, Power Struggle, takes a more tactical approach. You can choose between U.S. and North Korea, and each player earns points for kills and other goals. These points allow you to upgrade/purchase armor, weapons, vehicles, and even some buildings. Throughout the Power Struggle, each team tries to capture zones of the map in order to win. One twist puts this multi-player action above the rest: you can actually get alien technology by capturing alien crash sites, and reverse engineer this technology to build or upgrade new, more powerful units.

The A.I. in this game actually lives up to it's name: intelligent. Crytek uses a sensor-based enemy A.I. that is supposed to imitate human behavior. So, you'll most likely have to have some serious skills to get past these aliens.

There is some word that Crysis may be coming to PS3 and Xbox 360. For us less financially-inclined people, this is good news. There is also word of having to face some intense natural disasters, which include everything from tornadoes to, if the rumors are true, tsunamis.

So, with all these amazing promises, will Crysis deliver? Find out 11/16/07.

As promised, here are a few links to IGN's videos and screenshots.

I will be updating every chance I get, or every time IGN releases a new update. Feel free to discuss the game and post any info that I haven't already.
