Overhauling a PC

A while back, I mentioned upgrading my brothers computer. It was pretty much unanimously decided that the better option would be to simply replace it. But I forgot to mention 2 rather important details. The first being that the box (or case, or tower, or whatever) that its in is rather large and made of clear plastic. It has panels on the sides that can be easily removed and can fit much more components than it currently has. I might be able to post a picture of it later so people can see what I'm talking about, basically this thing was made to be upgraded. Secondly, it has a really good power supply. If you would really like to know exactly what it is, just ask, but basically its a power supply that can handle much more that its currently being used for.

The other components and specs of the computer are basically rubbish, but the thing just cries out to be upgraded. My father bought it specifically with that in mind, and now it looks like we can finally get around to fixing it up. But what I need to know is what to replace first, I'm guessing the motherboard but I really have no idea. I want the end result to be at least a decent running machine, and I definitely want to get it a really good graphics card so I can finally make use of my copies of Fallout 3 and Oblivion. But of course we want this thing to be as beastly as possible.

I realize that I probably haven't provided the information that someone might need to provide me with a good answer, so just let me know what else you need to know. My father is hell-bent on upgrading this computer, so don't bother telling me not to. I'm hoping to replace the components one by one, and gradually make it better and better. But I realize that might not be possible and we might have to get it all done all at once. So I would like some recommendations on how to proceed.

TL,DR- Just move on to another thread if this applies to you.

Depends on what kind of mobo (motherboard) you have.. does it have a slot for PCI Express, what kind of RAM does it take, does it use an Intel or AMD processor?

If you want it for Fallout 3 at maximum, you'll need: RAM, a good GPU/Video Card, a motherboard, a cpu (a cheap dual-core will do fine), and a PSU (Power Supply Unit) to make sure everything gets the power it needs to run smoothly.

When I was looking to build my own custom PC (for the same reasons as you actually, Fallout 3) I wanted a PC that could run the current games at maximum for at least around $300... I can't remember, but I think I got the price to around $400... but that was including a new HDD, CD/DVD Drive, Case, RAM, Motherboard, GPU, CPU and a PSU.

Those are the parts I was going for at the time.

Re: Overhauling a PC

Well, it looks like I'm in way over my head again. Thanks for the advice JD. I really don't know what I'm doing and my dad is the kind of old fart that Googles Yahoo so he can check his email, so... yeah. But we are two fairly intelligent guys, I guess we can't screw it up to badly. I'll be sure to hit the books before I proceed with this.
