Wii Zapper

The 'games make kids violent' furore has now turned its fiery attention on Nintendo as the company gears up to launch the gun-shaped Wii Blaster Remote attachment.

Angry parents are in fits over Nintendo's decision to release the peripheral for the family-orientated console. "Great, this is what we need," said one furious parent blogger. "Children with guns learning how to aim and shoot. Then we can sit back and wonder what is happening to our country with kids killing kids."

They added: "What's next? Could we make it squirt blood, too?" Well, no because it would go all over the TV and that would be rubbish.

"Why don't they enclose an application to the NRA (National Rifle Association) in every box as well? The marketing person who came up with this brain child of an idea should be fired," commented a "very concerned grandparent".

Another said in the US blog: "I think it's irresponsible for Wii to come out with a controller that looks like a gun. What kind of message are we sending as parents when we buy these things for our kids?" If you think it's irresponsible, why would you buy it for your child?

Is it not down to the parent to take responsibility for what games their children own and play?

Talk about irony, when the first gun controller came out for the original NES, nobody seemed to make a fuss then. Boy how the times have changed...

And not only that, but what children of the past few decades haven't enjoyed going out and pretending to shoot aliens with toy guns, or having water fights with Super Soaker guns. It's just a gaming toy/add-on...nothing harmful. I mean, i don't remember seeing any news report of a kid shooting someone for fun, because he always played with his toy gun. But that's just how i see it, and it is afterall the Parent's decision on whether or not the child is meant to play with the controller or not.

Duck Hunt anyone O.o
The added realism of games today really has some people concerned with violence in the games. I know the xbox 360 can limit content for a particular account. I'm not sure about the Wii or PS3

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

So a kid can sit and play with toy soldiers, cap guns and have mock cowboys and indian battles etc but cant use a toy gun as a controller for a game? Yeah... right... just another stupid argument in the video games make kids violent row which is utter crap.

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

Yawn - parents are dumb.

If you don't want your kid to have one - here's a tip: DON'T BUY THEM ONE.

It's not rocket science for goodness' sakes...besides, any kid worth his/her salt can create a gun out of anything if they so wish - simply extending two fingers and yelling "bang! bang!" does the job. So what - cut off your kid's hands because it encourages them to shoot people for real??

I used to play cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians and all that stuff when I was a kid and the only person I have ever shot is myself with a rifle. If anything, I'm just a danger to me

Games have had gun controls for ages - even back in the days of going to the arcade, they've had them. This is nothing new and those parents are moaning about nothing. It doesn't even look like a real gun - more like something out of Star Trek...

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

Totally a situation of double standards and its commonplace for young kids to love acting like soldiers and firing guns, its all part of being a kid and growing up. As a kid guns and weapons in general fascinated me and its perfectly healthy to learn about them. The more you know about them and get used to the idea the more you know the damage they can cause and respect them for what they are when you are older and see the real things in action. This is just parents trying to alienate people against games as usual and try and tempt people to not produce games for kids.

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

People are too whiney these days.

Did anyone complain about that? No. People thought "Hey - cool!". This is just another example of parent's jumping on the "blame video games" bandwagon. Go do something to get the real guns off the streets instead.

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

And to me that looks like more of a gun than the Wii one

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

Yeah. But I guess you could argue that the epic 'Duck Hunt' isn't nearly as real as our shooters today.

But nontheless, and I think Brian could agree with me, that playing a FPS with this zapper couldn't possibly count as 'training kids' to fire guns.... unless that controller has some serious realistic features!

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

It be pretty funny if the Zapper had a kickback

Hitting the little brat in the teeth. The whole thing was a ploy to scar kids for life, making them forever scared of firearms.

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

I finally get back to the forums and I see this kind of news right off the bat. *sighs*. If they dont like it, then they dont have to buy it for their kids. End of story. God, all parents seem to do now days is *****.

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

 Totally unexpected news

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

*sigh*

I give up. I'm not paying attention to the human race anymore. I'm returning to monkeys.

*NEWS FLASH! Forum Go-er Claiming To Be Christian Commits Heresy By Implying Evolution Exists! "We can't have our children exposed to this monster!" says a Very Concerned Grandparent.*

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

oh man...
if your child is going to run out and do in reality everything he does as fantasy, your child has some serious psychological issues...
more important even than knowing what is right and wrong is knowing what is real and what is not... the pixelated people on the TV are not real... your friends at school are... the Nintendo gun is not real... the ones that guy is selling out the back of his van are...
if these parents have children which are unable to grasp these simple concepts then perhaps they should be seeking psychological attention...
or perhaps it is the parents who are having the difficulties grasping the simple concept of reality? =]

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

What I particularly like: Parents who complain about violent video games, but - and I'm serious - take them hunting.

Local hilarity.

Re: Parents In An Anti-Wii Zapper Uproar...

Or how about this. Your Step mother yells at you because she doesn't want her nephew seeing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, but then the nephew says "I play this game all the time at my house :D"

....

Or the fact that my nephew had some very realistic Ninja game. I watched him play it, it was very bloody and gory, and filled with Sword fighting. And now she wonders why her son is violent?
