Peter Molyneux attacked, 'never doing interviews again'

Peter Molyneux known as an industry visionary and the mind behind the Fable universe was, as some would put it, viciously attacked in an interview recently. He was asked outright, "Are you a pathological liar?" He is known for his passion and more widely known for his checks bouncing. He came under fire recently as his company 22cans is rumored to be stopping development of Godus, a god game. Especially bad as he promised one winner of curiosity a life changing event and a sum portion of Godus' profits. Unfortunately this did not come to pass. There are alot of people in the industry who have taken that shady, shifty role so why is it Peter is the target of gaming journalism. Some say it is because he is an easy target, no triple A publisher behind him to protect him. Knowing what life is like developing games, many people who have been burned by his promises in the past are actually siding with Peter and calling this an ambush interview and unfair.

My thoughts are that if you start a Kickstarter with a goal how can you not be a Peter lol? To me Peter is a badass, even if he is going abit senile.

My gripe is that his dealings have been known in the industry for years, he has his own meme. People call him a legend sarcastically. There have been so very many people in the industry right now who have done far worse then Peter. Millions have been stolen from Indie developers, so many breaches have taken place and there is no coverage of it whatsoever. I feel like attacking Peter is like throwing the addict in jail and letting the druglord continue to operate.

Whatever the case, I hope this hard hitting form of journalism continues and other developers are taken to task.

I'm more surprised he hasn't been drawn into bad publicity sooner. I've wondered at one point or another why he hasn't had any direct spotlight when his promises haven't come to fruition.

I think early access is getting a bad rep lately unfairly and though only 33% (or there abouts) of games have been finished its still early days for most of the popular ones on there currently. People are playing these titles for hundreds of hours at a time in the games development that we as consumers don't usually ever see.

With consoles supporting Indies and everything Valve is doing I think a real push to democratize game development would be the best thing ever for the industry. It means that for every decent game there will be 100 wrecks but as it becomes easier to create games and avenues for self publishing it can only be good for us as consumers.

Yeah I mean it's great more companies can self publish and pretty much anyone can get into games development with the right tools. However it's a shame that so many people have been burned by poor developers and bad management. Just needs to be a better control on when customers don't get what they have paid for.

Only reputable outlets get prerelease access to review a game and of course this special treatment isnt free, which shows up in the review score and we all get swindled. I have stopped preordering games due to day 1 DLC, microtransactions & broken/buggy launches. I think gamers are just as guilty of hyping games as developers themselves. I mean look at No Mans Sky and the attention that has received and barely anything is known about it currently.

I think modders should be acknowledged more and better and more open tools released to them. Paying them would be difficult but the really well known mods often get picked up by the devs themselves these days and mod support is getting far better as are the tools.

I had a good rant with the other half about this. I forget what I said exactly because I was having one of those debate-highs where I keep running my mouth over and over, never letting anyone get a word in edge-ways.

To put it short: Molyneux is a dreamer; not a liar. He's like a puppy that runs his mouth whenever he gets over-excited, like me when I have a debate-high. He's made a lot of mistakes, but at the end of the day he's still a huge, integral part of the gaming industry, and it's a huge shame that his reputation in that very industry is now forever a joke, and the target of unfair attacks and accusations. He's not a bad man, or a bad game creator. He's just stupidly over-zealous. Most of us have had a great idea we were really excited about or, maybe when we did that crappy drawing of a bunny rabbit aged 5 we ran into the room screaming "LOOKIT WUT I DID MUM!" and your mum just looks at it like "f*ck is this?" Same thing. Okay, not really. Molyneux is a grown man(I checked), but the premise is really the same for him. He's proud of what he makes. He has prior expectations of himself, his creations and his team of creators that are sometimes not met. I wouldn't be surprised if once an idea is thought up, someone is like "sure Moly, this is totally doable - here, hold my beer..." and then when it all tanks Moly's like "DUDE" but it's too late, he already spilled the beans and the whole internet full of Fable fans, all 6 of us, lose our sh*t. But that's all in the past. So Godus huh? That seems like a pretty good game, right guys?

Something I heard about recently which is somewhat relevant. Within the last year, I moved to Boston where the HQ of Harmonix (guitar hero, rock band) is located. Apparently they recently laid off over half their staff. It's understandable since music games aren't such a novel thing any more. Its understandable they would want to hire fresh minds for their next endeavor. Still, it shines an ugly light on corporate game development. All these companies probably re staff on a regular basis, but once out of the job, what's an employee to do? They'd have to move cities to work for another company of similar caliber. From here, the closest thing is Ubisoft Montreal but really, these guys kinda get ****ed. That's another aspect of the gaming industry that could use some scrutiny.
