Peter Molyneux Refers To Himself As A Failure

Thats right, Peter Molyneux has came out and referred to himself as a failure to the BBC in a recent interview.

CVG said:
Speaking to the BBC, the Lionhead boss says he's failed as a designer because he has not been able to attract a wider audience to gaming.

"It's a failure borne out of myself as a games designer and creator and indeed the wider games industry," he said in the BBC games blog. "For making games that only appeal to a small part of world. The number of people playing games is going up, but it's going up slowly. The number of people who could potentially be playing games is huge.

"For a long time I made games I mistook adding complexity for being a good thing," he added, touching on his famous habit of chucking extra options and features onto his games.

"In actual fact I kept adding new features to a game when I should have been fixing something deep down in the guts of the game that was slightly wrong.

"What I feel more and more as I get more and more experienced is that if I can make something really simple, give gamers a highly-polished experience, then I have succeeded." Don't worry Peter, we love you really.

Last week Molyneux revealed the third "big feature" in his Xbox 360 sequel Fable 2; an Xbox Live Arcade spin-off game and full drop-in, drop-out co-op.

"I want people to sit down and play the game with a friend," Molyneux told the Beeb. "Now sometimes your friend could be a gamer. But probably more likely your friend is going to be someone who has never played the game before.

"Both of you should feel good about what you are doing, neither of you should feel stupid about what you are doing."

Hush you fool - removing what makes your games yours and going mainstream is bad, mmmkay?!

Re: Peter Molyneux Refers To Himself As A Failure

I don't think you're a failure, Pete! You're still my hero!

Re: Peter Molyneux Refers To Himself As A Failure

Awww poor peter. :(..

Re: Peter Molyneux Refers To Himself As A Failure

Re: Peter Molyneux Refers To Himself As A Failure

Hes being humble and admitting his mistakes, hes a great and a real visionary for the games industry but some people have been disappointed by his end products. Guess hes acknowledging the doubters for their reasons and admitting his mistakes and hoping people will know that hes realised them now and will change that.

I really don't think so. He made a great game, if I can make a great game, I would brag about it 24/7!

Thats when people start to see others as arrogant and pick fault with everything they do and the type of people they love to see fail. His main downfall was his own vision and the fact he used to speak his ideas before putting them into practice. Then when those ideas didnt quite come together in the ways he planned people were disappointed and let down that his full vision wasnt reached. I think he feels the same now and like hes let himself down in the past. Hes a genius and has a fantastic gaming and creative mind and hes taken the compliments with the criticism and became a better game designer for it.

I share much the same problem as he does, although I'd rather have that problem than complete arrogance >_>"

At any rate, everyone makes mistakes, especially in regards to being creative. It's more how you deal with them that's important.

Populous and Black & White were both unique and amazing series of games. He shouldn't change a bit.

I think he is especially referring to Populous here.

Both put it quite well and i agree, he doesnt need to change. Hes a breath of fresh air in an industry that can sometimes be filled with cloned games and ideas.

He's not like alot of developers out there. I once found a quote by some Nintendo designer/important person who said something along the lines of "I try not to look for what people want." :wassat: It's good to not always shoot for what the masses expect, but that's like being a bigwhig at Microsoft and deciding that "we're not looking for what people want"... which is probably more than likely the reason behind Vista... PM, on the other hand, gives people what they want, but in a new, previously unseen way. I mean, Fable- the mother of all inventive rpgs at the time. Plus, it's alot different than saying that he doesn't really care what people want...

Re: Peter Molyneux Refers To Himself As A Failure

The greatest successes and greatest failures are often the the from the same people, those who try the most. I hope Peter is just being humble and doesn't realy feel like a failure.

Re: Peter Molyneux Refers To Himself As A Failure

Did anyone else think that Fable 2 wasn't going to happen anymore when they read this thread title?

Anyways, I agree. I hope he is just being humble because I like his style. The games he has created are great.

I kinda thought so.
