We all know what it is, but just how do you people feel about it? For decades cosmetic surgery has been the go-to for those looking to cure their natural cosmetic "flaws". In many cases it yields positive results, especially those who receive subtle changes, but in other cases it can result in some going too far and leading to disaster...

Liposuction is no different, where people choose to take weight loss shortcuts to get their desired body build, but either end up with varying degrees of success, undesired results (such as excess wrinkly skin), or even death. Breast implants is another popular choice, and like the other surgeries it too ends up being abused and overriding mother nature.

Now, there are also other instances where said surgeries are not considered to be so "taboo", such as in the use of saving someone's life. A person suffering from a facial tumor or deformity that hinders their basic needs (a deformed nose that prevents proper nasal breathing). Another instance being common is within the MTF/FTM Trans communities, where plastic surgery is often necessary to achieve that truly feminine/masculine look.

So, how do you guys feel about plastic surgery? If someone you knew or loved was planning to get it, would you object to their want? Has there ever been a point in your life you contemplated on getting any form of cosmetic surgery?

If an average everyday person wishes to get plastic surgery then I don't have any gripes with it. It's their body, theirs to change if they wish, I think they should be properly informed of any complications that may arise during and after the procedure however. As for any negative repercussions, all I can say is they're adults and they've made their choice. Only problem is if it's someone I love, I might be more critical of their choice I admit. Mainly because I don't want it to ruin their lives may it go wrong. But ultimately as long as they have free will, I cannot stop them.

As for overriding nature, the way I look at it humans seek to defy nature all the time in some way or another, so it doesn't surprise me that they strive to modify themselves physically because of this. Being insecure about our bodies and wanting to change aspects of it is quite normal for a lot of people, just the way a lot humans think. For some the desire to change their bodies is practically non existent, for others it's an obsession. Some people just aren't satisfied with what nature gave them, you're always going to get people like that.

I think methods will become more refined and safer as they have done over time, (maybe even easily reversible,) heck maybe a few hundred years in the future we'll discover a way to rewrite our DNA and perform cosmetic surgery in a way never before thought possible eliminating the need of a scalpel (hey you never know!) It wouldn't surprise me, give the amount technological and biological research progression that has been made been made over the past century. How far plastic surgery technology progresses from this point will probably depend partially on how much of a demand there is for it in the future.

As for me there are certain things I would change about my body if I could at the snap of a finger, but nothing to the point where I would risk plastic surgery. I'm largely happy with my body the way it is.

It just shows that we've come into a world where we can edit and change literally any part of our body, hair, gender, appearance etc. If someone I knew wanted to do it, I'd try to persuade them not to as I don't really like the sound of it, especially since it can go wrong.

I think it should be free (where it isn't already) for anyone with a medical need for it such as burns victims, facial/body disfigurement etc - or if their health is severely threatened by it such as can be the case with overly large breasts which can cause permanent spinal injury in the worst cases. But it shouldn't be taken as a given that someone with a medical/physical issue should have to have it if they don't want to - it should be their choice. Some people wear their disfigurements (for want of a better term) with pride because it tells a story that should never be forgotten, such as extreme bravery or surviving something that should by rights have killed them.

But if you just want to look prettier then I would suggest the issue is in your brain and not your body. If you don't fix the internal problems then bigger boobs, a smaller nose or a tummy tuck are not going to necessarily stop you obsessing about how you look. Sure, I'd love to not be a fat cow with tree trunks for legs, four chins and a face like a car crash but a lot of that is down to personal perception, the behaviour of those wishing to upset me and my lifestyle of breeding and eating like a pig as I do so. Two of those things I can fix for myself without spending a fortune on surgery. The other one is their problem not mine (they're just jealous of how warm I stay in winter with all my rolls...haters gonna hate ;)).

If someone I knew wanted surgery I'd want to know their reasons - I think people should be made to undergo some sort of assessment or counselling prior to cosmetic surgical procedures (I know some places do that anyway but most just want your money) to ascertain why they are doing this. Sure, it won't make the surgeons a lot of money fixing people up to love themselves as they are but a lot less risky than surgery IMO.

As a socialist, I agree with Angel on this:

I think it should be free (where it isn't already) for anyone with a medical need for it such as burns victims, facial/body disfigurement etc - or if their health is severely threatened by it such as can be the case with overly large breasts which can cause permanent spinal injury in the worst cases.

As a libertarian, my philosophy is that you should be able to do anything that you want to do as long as it does not infringe upon the rights and liberties of others. I think plastic surgery is a stupid idea because it can very easily turn out badly and because spending all that money to merely look better is extremely shallow, but I wouldn't stop someone from getting it. If someone I knew wanted it, I would definitely voice my opinion on the matter, but I wouldn't fight against their right to get it.

The big point here is that it's everyone's own choice. If some people feel so low about themselves then maybe they should just do it. Even if it's something like a nose augmentation or even a breast augmentation. If something about yourself is making you feel so unhappy, enough to change it, to want to change it, then you should. Though it is possible that what you see, may not necessarily be what others see. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder afterall. Your lack of confidence and problems of your body that you see may well be in your head, so people should seek help before making even a small change to their body. And if you're confident enough in your own skin there should be no reason to do it.
Of course, some people just do it because they simply seek perfection. And for some it becomes an obsession, though it is possible for there to some kid of psychological disorder behind that.

There's also that whole risk of things going wrong. But let's be honest no one really seems to even care about that these days.

Personally, I'd never do it, well, unless there was some life threatening reason behind it or that I was in an accident that left me disfigured in some way, then I'd probably do it. Yes, I have cosmetic flaws(My arse-shaped chin does not count). I'm not proud of them, not ashamed of them. I'm rather content in my own skin. I'd prefer to keep myself as how I am. That's not to say I don't wear make-up or anything. I do. And I look after my hair and such, I have also dyed it a few times - that's probably the most appearance-altering thing I have ever done or will ever do.

Also: I agree with Angel where some surgeries for people of certain circumstances should be made free, though some things I believe are already free on the NHS here in the U.K.

it's their body and their right. not i nor anyone else can tell them that they have to live with their body the way it is if it bothers them to the extent that they would want to pursue surgery. what's to blame is the world we live in where peer pressure and the media would make something like it so popular.
i hate myself for sounding like every female english teacher i ever had, but it's true.

the topic of what i think of people who aren't comfortable with themselves and feel the need to change isn't wholly relevant... so i'll leave that out of it.
