PM: Casual games frowned on

PM believes that casual gaming is a big part of the games industry that is looked down upon, he intends to bring back the casual market by making casual/hardcore games into one. As with Fable II he has made the one button combat system. It allows noobs to play with only one button whilst allowing the more experienced players to go in depth with its unique and deep design.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

Hes right in a way, depends on the platform really. I mean most Nintendo Wii owners will be after casual games for it. However Lionhead are Microsoft developers so will be on one of the hardcore gamers consoles surrounded by games made for the hardcore gamers. So therefore lots of casual games on those platforms get shunned for the more complex and tougher hardcore gamers titles.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

Casual gaming should be frowned upon personally i think that if you buy a game you should get your moneys worth 20 hours ant least with fable he has done the impossible and merged the two 12 hours gameplay and a lifetime of exploration :)

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

Well, ima hardcore gamer, a lazy one! so single button combat is soooooooooo very bloody amazingly super mega ultra awsome.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

My mom owns a Wii, by owning the Wii she becomes another customer to sell to. Therefore increasing the number of people that can be marketed to, and you never know as she becomes better at games she may look for more of a challenge.

In my opinion the Wii is a casual gaming system with a few hardcore games, very few. There are no casual games really on either the 360 or PS3 outside of Live games.

I dont think casual games hurt or help really. But it does make the gaming market larger and possibly in the long run benefiting us all.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

casual gaming is so annoying, espically when i go to school and the casual gamers all talk about there amzing 1 hour on cod 4 last night, then me and the other hardcore gamers talk about decent things, god i hate casual gamers >.<

If the casual gamer, found it impossible to play some of the better games, they would loose a lot of money in sales. Not only that the casual player, might quit playing all together. We all have to start somewhere. I for one am glad there's settings. I don't think anyone should be excluded, from playing.:)
I agree he's right, and knows people, well enough to reach out to, every market.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

There is casual gaming and then garbage. Casual is just easier and simpler. Garbage involves hypnotizing children into buying any game that has an italian plumber.
Mario used to be cool. Now they just slap him into any genre and called it innovative.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

Always hated Mario... hes a plummer for gods sake! and hes just jumping around trying to hit turtles - its redicules!
and Roland, theres casual and garbage? does Oblivion include garbage? cause its not a casual game, and what about Fable 1? or all RPGs ever made? garbage?
no...

As I see it, there's two kinds of ppl in this world..
ppl who like Bouvais, and ppl who like the p!ss-filled taste of Heinz..
which one are you?

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

I'm all about PM's view on it.
I am an ex hardcore gamer.
I used to spend hours in front of the TV gaming.
Final Fantasy, Earthbound, Chrono, Guardian Knight, and tons of others.

Now I just simply don't have the time to game. I'm either practicing (music), or doing homework, or working, so I really appreciate this view.

I casually game now, which means less RPGs and more Mario Kart, platformers, shooters, and football games.

PM can create a game like Fable that I can causally play.
It has the appeal of a hardcore RPG with the feel of a casual game.
It's perfect!
(And I love Fable to boot!)

I sure do love me some PM.

I love casual games. I mean that people mistake garbage games for casual. Like blindly buying a mario game or a copy of guitar hero DS and calling them casual. Mario (after 2004) is garbage and fable two is casual. Hardcore games are better, though.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

Why hate casual gamers? That's one massive dose of Gaming Snobbery right there - I'm a casual gamer and rightly proud of it - it means I have more to do with my time than sit on my arse and play games hour after hour after hour. I run a home, a family and a husband () as well as holding down two jobs - any gaming time I get amongst all that is a bonus.

If anything, I'd prefer casual gaming to be encouraged more instead of it becoming an anti-social habit whereby kids sit for hours in their rooms never engaging with anyone unless they happen to be on XBL...I just don't understand the hardcore snobs any more than I understand console fanboys - all are a scourge, in my opinion, and need to get out more.

I hate to break it to you, but my total hours on uno is over 45. Hard core or not, games can be addictive.

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

Oh for sure - games are addictive. I've clocked up an insane number of hours on Oblivion, Fable TLC, Rainbow Six 2 and Viva Pinata - my point is, there's nothing wrong with being a casual gamer. People saying how they hate them is just retarded and from a parental point of view, I would hate for my young child to be glued to the box all day every day and never leave the house (like that kid off Britain's Worst Teenager who literally lived in his room and didn't even know how to hold a conversation). There needs to be a balance - you can be a hardcore gamer without playing nonstop. And those who class themselves as "hardcore" seem to have a different criteria from all the others - how do you even gauge it? For some it's how many hours they've clocked on one game; for others it's how many games they have completed. Then you've got the ones with high gamerscores, achievements, highest rank ingame...what's the official criteria in order to be classed as hardcore these days?

Re: PM: Casual games frowned on

Isn't a casual player someone who plays, when they can, or have the time? I think there are more than one definition. We could all be hardcore players, with just a small bit of time to play. It's starting to confuse me.O.o

Games that don't have a happy dues ex machina ending are hardcore. Games where "and so they lived happily ever after" applies are casual.

o.0
Yeah...
I live with my friend, I go to school, I have a job, I play soccer, I get hammered on weekends and holidays, AND Im a hardcore gamer.
Actullay, I don't really see how Fable II is a casual game... it's an RPG.
"oh you can button mash, or you can learn new moves and time your attacks" that doesnt make it casual... that makes DoA and Tekken casual games too o.0, and there's been held turnaments for those games!

So, is Fable II a casual and hardcore game, because you can choose to mash the buttons, or time the attacks?
if that's all, then PM has really over hyped this "feature"...

Hardcore gamer is a widely used term applied to describe a type of video game player. There is currently no unanimously agreed upon definition for the term. Some describe hardcore gamers as those whose leisure time is largely devoted to playing or reading about video games. This type of gamer prefers to take significant time and practice on games, in contrast to a casual gamer. Many hardcore gamers pride themselves on mastering the rules or use of a game, although this is not a strict requirement. Conflicting opinion argues that it is not so much the time spent on games however, as casual gamers can spend hundreds of hours on games without ever mastering them.

- what do you mean "I didn't write that?!?"
