Possible New Rule

It has come to my attention that many people (new members, mostly) cannot seem to understand that posting in a spam/porn thread is not the right idea. I think a new guideline should be instated which says to only report spam/porn threads and not to post in them, or suffer a severe verbal beating or discipline.

I bring this up because of the large influx of spam we have been getting lately and I have had to be the hand-slapper of all the noobs who can't seem to leave the spam threads alone.

Re: Possible New Rule

true. in a way. that kind of thing really grinds my gears

Re: Possible New Rule

Same, I just hate it. Plus I don't enjoy being exposed to that stuff as often as it happens.

Re: Possible New Rule

Maybe a sticky thread clearly stating to not post in them and clear instructions on how to report the posts.

Re: Possible New Rule

It would stop the few who read the rules posts from posting in them, but in the end I think people who post in these threads don't have the common sense to do that anyway.

I really liked Sharons idea of not being able to post images or anything until you get to like 5 posts or something to stop the spammers, but that would strain the server.

Is there a thing that means that threads with the keyword "Porn", "sex", "incest", etc cannot be posted?

Re: Possible New Rule

We do have a list of filtered words, like the swear words so you can't say **** or **** or stuff like that - but the only time it becomes a problem is if someone is writing something perfectly innocent but needs to insert a word such as incest or sex in order to make a point...might make it virtually indecipherable! But I can ask Steve about it...

The main problem is with the images and videos - those are the ones which cause distress the most I would say. At least with a link you are responsible for clicking on it and can't blame the forum for misleading you...

A sticky thread is an idea but then not many people bother to read them after a while - like the thread resurrection posts, the rules and how to respect each other. People click on "new posts" and don't bother trawling through each individual forum on the off-chance they might find a post they ought to read - which is understandable given the sheer volume of posts.

But to be honest, regular members here should be savvy enough not to respond to porn threads and spammers - they are literally here and then gone; they don't actually want responses from people, they simply want to drop their links and go - that is their sole purpose. Those who reply and tell the staff to ban/edit/delete etc really ought to know better - reporting it is the best way of bringing it to our attention.

I can edit the rules and add the whole "don't reply to spam threads" thing - can't guarantee people will properly read it and act accordingly, but if it's in there at least they can be directed to it if necessary.

On a side-note, I would like to thank Brian for all his hard work in letting us know when spammers arrive and dealing with those who can't help but respond to those posts and threads. It really is much appreciated and those reading this post would do well to adhere to Brian's instructions should he tell you to stop posting in a thread - he's not being out of line, he's helping - so please respect that. Thank you.

Re: Possible New Rule

What the idea of not being able to create threads until you have, let's say, 5 posts?

Re: Possible New Rule

I don't know if that is possible without adding another mod to the system but I'll have a dig around in the adminCP and take a look...

Re: Possible New Rule

It is an unwriten rule as is so formalizing it isn't a huge leap. I second the idea of making it a written rule and I'll add that one shouldn't reply to posts that reply to spam send a PM to them instead.

Is there a way to have new threads created by new users require approval? That would take a lot of work on the staffs part I'm guessing so maybe that's not such a great idea.

+ Rep Brian

Re: Possible New Rule

We can make it so that every new user has to wait for us to verify their email address and also they need to input one of those codes you get where the numbers and letters are all warped because bots can't do it.

But the workload would be insane and codes can be bypassed by selecting the "I'm disabled" link and having the code read out loud by your speakers. Plus, we still won't know even through verifying each email address individually if the person is a spammer or not...

Re: Possible New Rule

I SAY we pass the anti-noob legislature and well... and... um... well, I haven't gotten that far, but really!

Re: Possible New Rule

It's a ghastly nightmare!
+ For bring it up though, it is annoying when the few have to spoil it for the majority

I think I'm safe..... ahh he's back!!:frenchy:

Re: Possible New Rule

I had another idea, each new member (as soon as they finish registration) should be brought to the Rules and Guidelines page so they are at least exposed to it and cannot plead ignorance to the rules, which is no excuse anyway.

I do like the "5 Post Idea".

Re: Possible New Rule

Well now you're a mod that should sort a lot of it out - Steve has also done some weirdness with the boards and made it so loads of words are now regarded as spam, although this will require all staff members to keep an eye on the Admin/ModCP moderation queue as posts with those words in will need approving before anyone can see them - this way you can check the post/thread to make sure it is definitely spam before deleting it...

I regularly check the moderation queues so that shouldnt be too much of a problem, i got into that habit because of the DMC Forums.

I do like the "5 Post Idea".

I agree with that idea personally. If they haven't been banned before making 5 posts, I guess we can trust them enough... hopefully.

Re: Possible New Rule

Aight - who's the guy pretending to be me? I know I voted for the forth option, and I'm fairly sure I'm the only "me" around... :shifty:

Re: Possible New Rule

What about people who want to introduce themselves or ask a question without staying here for any longer. It`s not a big problem, but many wouldn`t want to post 5 (pointless) posts before being able to ask what they want.

And the other thing, if I report spam/porn etc, do I have to comment something in the comment post, I`ve reported a couple of times lately and can`t think of anything to write. Or is "spam" or "porn" enough?

That should usually do it. You could get creative and write "Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Baked Beans and Spam" :P

Soon as its reported the comment usually lets us know the nature of the spam or whatever but it isnt that important as its usually quite evident.
