Kinect ! Wait . . . What?!

LOS ANGELES — There's a growing movement in video games — motion control. And Microsoft's latest twist: Its new system for the Xbox 360, dubbed Kinect and being unveiled this week, requires no controller at all.
Microsoft got a head start Sunday night by incorporating its game system and footage from new titles into a performance by Cirque Du Soleil at the University of Southern California. The performance troupe, which spent four months developing "a customized experience," took its inspiration for the event from Kinect, the official name of what had been known as Project Natal under development.
The 4-year-old Xbox 360 has long seemed targeted at hard-core gamers, with a controller that could be intimidating.
"For lots of people, that controller is a barrier," says creative director Kudo Tsunoda. "We set out to make a new control paradigm where anybody can get in and play, without having to read the instructions or learn a complicated set of controls."
Kinect's built-in camera and microphone (due later this year, no price set) uses facial and voice recognition to let you, for instance, log onto Xbox Live, start games and pause movies. And a new menu lets you choose games or services such as Netflix by simply reaching out and pointing toward the screen selection. Video chat lets Xbox 360 homes connect; the smart camera widens when another person enters the room.
Microsoft's Marc Whitten credits Nintendo with setting things in motion: "They have done some amazing things and brought new people to the category. This is fundamentally different. It's (about) my body being the controller (and) being able to communicate with just my voice to the system."
Microsoft has announced that Project Natal finally has a name. The device will now officially be known as the “Kinect”. Details about pricing and a release date have yet to be announced, but hopefully we’ll hear about that at E3 this week. The first Kinect games have been confirmed too:
Kinectimals – Lets players train and play with 20 different virtual cats. Expect lions, cheetahs and tigers too, as nothing quite screams children like a nice big lion.
Joyride – The Xbox Live Primetime game announced last year has been repackaged and will now cost actual money. It’s a racing game where gamers can hold their hands out as if using an imaginary steering wheel. Other Kinect elements include acceleration boosting (pull your hands towards you and push back) and executing jumps and tricks (we have no idea how to do those yet).
Kinect Sports – Six sports: Boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, football (what yanks call soccer) and table tennis. Supposedly, real motions from the actual sports named control the game.
Kinect Adventures – Not much is known about this one apart from that it has one mode called “River Rush”. In it, you have to go river-rafting through obstacle courses. It features time trials and is playable by up to four players. You have to lean in different directions to steer the raft, and jumping can get you to special areas.
Dance Central – Typical dancing game to cash in on the latest gaming craze. In development over at MTV Games, so could be good though. We’re holding out hope.
Star Wars and Disney games – These two are currently in development and don’t have titles yet, but they will be separate games based on their labelled IP. Microsoft is developing them in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney. They aim for these to be the big draw for Kinect.
Video Chat – A gesture based video chat program. It has face-to-face communication and you can share photos, just like old-school Vision Camera-based Photo Party. Again, no price or launch date for it has been announced. We’ll keep you posted.
"This is (Microsoft's) attempt to leapfrog the Wii and broaden the appeal of the Xbox," says Geoff Keighley of Spike's GameTrailers. "The questions are, 'Does the controller-free environment make (the Xbox 360) more accessible?' and 'Is it fun?' "

Microsoft has given Kinect a release date of November.
The news came after the company's bizarre event for the device earlier this evening.
MS is still yet to give the device a price, however - something we're hopeful will come out of its 'hardcore' E3 Xbox press conference tomorrow morning in LA.
Microsoft premiered Kinect at an E3 show that included ponchos and an elephant.
Games shown off include the Kinetic Sports pack that USA Today outed earlier - with beach volleyball included.

AND . . . New XBOX 360 Design?
Look at the image above.
This is believed to be the new Xbox 360 redesign. It’s 250 Gb. It includes WiFi and it’s compatible with something called Kinect. One can only assume that Kinect is the brand new name for Natal. Or is it? Hopefully this will be either confirmed or denied at the Natal Experience conference starting tonight/this morning at 3.00am GMT.
