Reach Impressions

that's right all you halo haters out there.
ZJ specifically... calling me the master chief :(

reach came in the mail today, and i wasted the entire day playing it. i finished the campaign, which i found to have one of the best stories in a halo game. for the life of my i can't decide if i liked the first halo or this one better.
i dabbled in forge for about 15 minutes (it's REALLY complicated so i need to spend some time to get good at it), and played some matchmaking.

my impressions: the last thing it did was disappoint. for someone who's been playing halo for the past decade, this new installment still felt fresh, the story was immersive, and the matchmaking is wicked fun. all the minor tweeks they made by adding loadouts and limiting when you can be a spartan and when you can be an elite seemed to do nothing short of improve.

i spent good money on it, and i'm not disappointed.

to those of you who have played it, what are your impressions of the game so far?

Re: Reach Impressions

I had my hopes high for this game, and honestly, I was a bit disappointed. It seems like all Bungie has done is recycle what they did 3 years ago, adding a few new weapons and melee assassinations. Playing Reach feels like an expansion pack to Halo 3 at best. I wouldn't go as far to say that Reach was ODST bad, but I just wasn't that impressed with the game. The storyline was immersive and the multiplayer was fun at first, but ultimately, I think after 3 years Reach could have been much better. I used to be a huge Halo fan, but after H3 I started falling away from the franchise and more toward Call of Duty. I thought Reach might renew my love for the Halo games once more, but, unfortunately it was a let down.

Re: Reach Impressions

This game is definitely on my maybe list (only because I'm not a big FPS player, especially on consoles). The Trilogy was really fun, and Reach looks really good, but I want to continue the Master Chief's story.

Re: Reach Impressions

I got the game yesterday and i like it very much im on the 4th mission now :)
the game looks really good and the story is good too.
I've done some forge too and it got some tweaks but its still the same concept

And for all the guys who say bungies milking halo, the milk aint sour. ;)

Re: Reach Impressions

I like that, Dentie. Nicely put. ^_^

I'm really eager to play Reach but I'm not in a hurry to buy it. I seem to be one of the few people who really enjoyed ODST.

I'd buy it in a second if it was out for PC but I don't play on my 360 nearly enough to warrant renewing my gold subscription or, well, paying the inflated prices for 360 games. I'll probably purchase it when the price dips a little. If anyone wants to do a Legendary run when I've got it then that'd be awesome.

I liked ODST too. It was something else and it was pleasant...
To bad i havent got live so i can do a legendary run with you, just a 2 day card i got with Reach.

Btw: you got mw2 for PC?

Re: Reach Impressions

It's good. Doesn't have the same addictiveness as MW2 did when it first came out but all in all, it's much better than Halo 3 and the weapons are much better. Haven't played any campaign yet, waiting for a 4th friend to buy it (probably tomorrow) so I'll get stuck in with it then.

Re: Reach Impressions

I thought ODST was decent but the faffing around between missions was frustrating and dull, Reach in my opinion is better than ODST by a country mile and im only on the 5th mission or so. The game feels more like Halo 1 crossed with Halo 3 (in my opinion the best 2 of the series). Nothing has truly wowed me yet in the way Halo did apart from enemies we have been fighting in every Halo game (Elites and Hunters) still managing to be rather intimidating.

Re: Reach Impressions

I am on the fourth mission, playing the campaign off and on, on Heroic, it is REALLY fun, the matchmaking is also disgustingly good, firefight is pretty good. My only real complaint is Forge, Forge is a DOWNGRADE.

Im doing it on Heroic at moment too and some parts are challenging though thats probably because i havent played Halo for an absolute age.

Hows Forge a downgrade though? I didnt use the one in the original but ive watched extended videos of the improvements they made over the original so dont see how it could have been downgraded.

Re: Reach Impressions

Isn't Forge the thing where you make your own maps? How is that bad even when it WAS bad? If something like that has been improved upon it can only get better.

Honestly, Reach looks and sounds good. I hates Halo 3 (mostly due to butchery of storyline) but loved 1 and 2 (2 because I ****in love the Arbiter, it's true). I liked some of the additions in 3, but I have to say I despise most shooters in multiplayer. Halo feels too gimmicky at least (even since Halo 1 it was gimmicky to me), and there feels like no level of strategy, merely who is better at having joystick sensitivity up to max and be able to still make slight movements (which is indeed skill, and maybe I just don't feel like getting good at multiplayer). What Halo needs for multiplayer is AI bots to shove into either team or into a free for all. I don't like getting spawn killed 3 times in a row.

I guess Halo just isn't that great to me, however, Reach does indeed look good.

indeed you're right. it's virtually impossible to make a map editor more capable without making it less user friendly. they did a fantastic job of adding everything they could, just about everything you would need to build the structure of your choice. but as a result, it takes a LOT of practice to know everything. even finding the right piece to put down is a chore because there are so many options. categories of categories, block 1X1, 2X2, 2X1, etc.

@ Firis i think you'll find that you like the new forge if you take the time to learn all the little tricks. even if you choose not to, for all of the maps and gametypes that'll come out of it will be worth it alone.

I just don't like some of the choices they made, example: You move around the object, and you can not freely move it up and down, you cannot move the object out or in, you can only distance yourself from the object and then after that you can move the object forward, the movement of the object itself feels the same, but in a more complex manner, the options seem whacky on my end.

I am sure if I play with it more, I will get used to it, but it just seems like I could make a good map on Halo 3 in an hour and a half, but in Reach it would take three or four hours.

Re: Reach Impressions

I just got this game last night, I've only played through the first level, but from what I've played I can honestly say that it was right for this game to be so hyped up. I think it is awesome, much better than ODST, I wasn't a big fan of it but I think Bungie went all out with this.

Re: Reach Impressions

Eventually opted for the Fable III controller rather than this. I do not feel bad for it.

Re: Reach Impressions

Day 2: i'm horribly addicted now. i've played game after game, i'm dead set on getting ranked up and buying armor. i hope i get over it soon.

Re: Reach Impressions

Not interested in it and probably won't get it. I have better things to waste my money on.

Trust me, its far from a waste of money mate. Best $88 AUS I've ever spent.

Re: Reach Impressions

Sadly, I did what I always do when a shiny new game comes out and raped the campaign to death. Playing on Heroic, completed in maybe 9 hours or so and the only real bit I felt excited at was the credit scene with the frigate, and that's only because it reminded me of Halo CE.

The multiplayer is still amazing though and the customization will make me return for more juicy goodness.

Re: Reach Impressions

I was a little dissapointed, Still haven't played Matchmaking though..

Campaign felt too short and not very in-depth, for me that is.

And ODST was REALLY bad, That was a horrid game that shouldnt of been made, Hah! :D
