Can you not use your own hero rather than a henchmen? And also interact with
traders? PRetty sure the manual says all of that.

There is no difference from what I've heard. On xbox live you are still a henchmen. I hope this will be patched soon as well. It would be nice if you were free to roam your friends world on live but you have to stick together as it's a fixed camera. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a patch that will fix this.
