Sleeping hobo

Hello all, I have a thought, and was wondering if you guys think im right or not. SO.. way back in the beginning of the game you have to steal the beer from the sleeping hobo. During this childhood quest it warns you not to wake him. I have tried hitting him, running into him and all sorts of stuff, he doesnt wake up. I was wondering, was this quest made in order to show the players the sneak ability, but then changed so he wouldnt wake up when that idea was scraped? thoughts?

I was thinking that to at the start. I was wondering how I was supposed to use the sneak ability. But, of course there was nothing in the manual about it.

Yeah first time through I walked very slow, then the second time I didn't care as much and just sprinted in and out.
