So I started hitting the gym a few months back. I've put on a lot of weight and it is very visible, especially my upper body and arms. However, with it came the problem of tears in the skin, stretch marks. They look real ugly and from what I've read they are permanent(!)

Anyone know how to possibly get rid of them, and to prevent more? A Google search reveals nothing but self-proclaimed miracle products for preggers.... >_<

There arent any real miracle cures but there are things that can lessen them and over time possibly get rid of them. I remember a product called Bio Oil that I heard recommended a while ago. To stop any more you have to make sure your weight doesnt rapidly jump up or down.

NHS said:
You may get stretch marks if you put on a lot of weight over a short period. The stretch marks may remain even if you lose the weight that you have gained. However, they should fade over time.

If you diet regularly, stretch marks can form as your weight goes up and down rapidly. If you are dieting, it is important to lose weight slowly and steadily so that your skin is not put under strain.

Bodybuilders and athletes can also sometimes get stretch marks as their muscles increase in size.

Damn it. I guess my genes suck when it comes to this issue and I am doomed to get them...

Take it you have been trying to bulk up then as you hit the gym? Its not unnatural to get them when your body changes fast as it doesnt give your skin enough time to naturally stretch itself. Best advice is to take things a little slower and give your body a chance to catch up with the changes and they wont be that noticeable. A lot of people have them for all sorts of reasons, there are creams out there that can lessen their appearance but would be best to try and prevent them or lessen the chance of them beforehand. I hit the weights again recently too but have been trying to build up slowly and change my diet and eating habits to follow suit too.

B-but... TSUYU SMASH!!!....?

Would be possible in time :P but the disadvantage of gaining weight fast like that is that if you dont keep up the weights your body takes on fat at the same rate too as your consuming more calories to fuel your workouts. Also muscle is easier to lose than gain and if schedule changes and you go from long high intensity workouts to less frequent ones your weight can fluctuate depending on eating patterns.

Personally ive tried to keep my metabolism high, eat often but some small meals through the day with plenty of protein & iron and fresh fruit and veg. I dont want to bulk up as such though just lower my body fat and gain muscle/tone everything up.

I've heard coconut oil can help.

But it is, like, in the cooking department of the supermarket so it seems kinda weird.

Like lathering up with butter or something.

Gotta butter/baby oil those bad boys up Arnie style!

There are things out there but avoid the highly expensive (apparent miracle cream) ones and best to ask around chemists etc. Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E creams are meant to be good. That Bio-Oil I mentioned is recommended by quite a few places as well as things that contain Emu Oil, Aloe Vera, Vitamin E & Jojoba oil.

EDIT* Found another 3 recommended ones...

Post a progress picture?

I'm far too self-concious to do that... for now.

To be on topic Tsuyu, I looooove Bodybuilding, and even though in the other thread I said I have to give up the gym, it really hurts me in a way that shows how passionate and obsessive I was. It hasn't been but a week and I miss it dearly.

I also got stretch marks on my arms and back of my legs, I take them as war scars, something had to be torn to get to where I am.

I remember an old school friend of mine was so skinny he could slip through a crack in the floorboard. Saw him the other day after two years, and it looked like he'd stuck his thumb in his mouth and blown himself into a larger shape. The guy is huuuge! But the hilarious thing is that his head is still exactly the same size, so he looks completely ridiculous. I think he has to turn his whole upper body just to look to one side.

Got myself some tiger stripe stretchmarks on the back of my arms, not from bodybuilding but from loosing and gaining weight constantly over the years, the weird thing is because they are pretty much the same pattern on both arms and look like tiger stripes they look like they're supposed to be there, like a tattoo or something.

Bio Oil is pretty good but there really is no cure-all for stretch marks. If there were, I would have basted myself in the stuff after having three humongous babies.

Anything rich in vitamin E is good so take supplements too if you don't already get enough in you diet. Skin elasticity is something you either have or you don't which is why some people can balloon and lose without penalty of stretch marks. those people are to be hated, just so you know.

You should climb, not body-build, one its fun, two its good for all round muscles, upper, core and legs, and its a good excuse to get fit, not just to go to a gym, well thats what I think..

Its weird seeing people from school and how much they've changed in physical appearance, so many douche-bag guys got big upper bodies now because they wanna look good around summer and what-not, pretty pathetic IMO.

I really have no idea, but since you're already probably mega-ripped from pumping iron and slaying your enemies, you could consider covering it up with a badass tattoo. I don't know if this will work, but I'm hoping you'll let me know.
