Sony Apologizes For Use Of Church In Resistance

Seems Sony have backed down in the argument over the use of Manchester Cathedral in its best selling game, Resistance Fall Of Man after the church threatened them with legal action for not asking permission to use it. I personally think the whole thing is stupid and Sony shouldnt have had to apologize for making a Cathedral that merely looks like Manchesters and having a gunfight in it. I think the church were petty over the whole thing and it was just a stupid argument from the start.

I agree with ya Andy, but I can also see some of the members and staff of that church not being too happy about a gunfight in it. However, I think that churches have more important things to do than sue video game companies...:hmm:

Sonys Statement

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is aware of the concerns expressed by the Bishop of Manchester and the Cathedral authorities about the use of Manchester Cathedral in the game Resistance: Fall of Man, and we naturally take their concerns very seriously.

"Resistance: Fall of Man is a fantasy science fiction game and is not based on reality. The game is set in an alternate and mythical version of Europe in the 1950s, in which the enemy are strange looking alien invaders seeking to destroy humanity.

"Whilst we believe that we have sought and received all permissions necessary for the creation of the game, we will be contacting the Cathedral authorities in order to better understand their concerns in more detail.

Im not entirely sure i think it was just the closest Cathedral that looked like what they wanted to create in the game and they took some photos of it and recreated some parts of it in the game.

It is clear to us that the connection between the congregation and the cathedral is a deeply personal and spiritual one. As a result, it is also clear that we have offended some of the congregation by using the cathedral in our science fiction game. It was never our intention to offend anyone in the making of this game, and we would like to apologise unreservedly to them for causing that offence, and to all parts of the community who we might also have offended.

We asked Sony to withdraw the game. They have refused to do this. We asked Sony to make a substantial donation to community groups nominated by the Cathedral. They have refused to do this. We also asked them to sign up to the Sacred Digital Guidelines. They have refused to do this. We fear that the next buildings to be cloned for virtual desecration could be a mosque, synagogue, temple or other churches.

I wonder if the image of the cathedral can be considered Intellectual Property or a part of the public domain. I'm sure that it has been depicted in numerous works of art without the church's consent nor there complaint. If that is the case, and I'm sure it is, the church has no case. If your IP is used and you do not defend its use then the IP falls into public domain. This is why companies like Disney have to file a law suit against every Joe or Sally that use their IP without consent. If they don't they could lose the right to exclusivity.

Yes, but I think the reason it offends the church is because there is a firefight in it. Still, it's a video game folks...

Whether it offends the church or not I don't think they have a case do to it being used in many other forms of art prior to the game. Might have been tasteless but it's not illegal.

Sony was smart to use the apologize expression. Unfortunately, I don't think they were good enough to use it so it had no effect. Maybe if the donate at the temple of Avo. No, they refused to do that.

I agree....and i say, most churches look for money anyway...the church i used to go to didnt give a damn about being religious, just like the Temple Of Avo they just want money. I have no hate towards religion....but they are goin to far...

Unfortunately that is so often the case - if these people actually were Christians (just because you "belong" to a certain faction doesn't make you one) then they wouldn't even be contemplating such ridiculous actions...

They should make up with the Roman Catholics and then blag them for money - they've got loads....
