Sony cuts price of PS3 on eve of E3

Begun the price wars have

The price cut, effective today, brings the 60-GB PlayStation 3 to $499, which puts it more in the range of the Xbox 360, which sells for $399 for a 20-GB version or $479 for a 120-GB model. Sony is also introducing an 80-GB PlayStation 3 console in August that will sell for $599 with a free copy of the racing game MotorStorm.

Thought they might do this, well any price cut in the world of gaming is a good one and welcomed by me.

It's a desperation move. They aren't making money on the console. If Microsoft is smart they will be following suit soon. Probably after the press has died down a bit.

Yeah i would agree, if Microsoft were to just drop it now people would be saying they are only doing it because they are desperate for Sony to not outdo them and are afraid. They should leave it a short while and then do the same (which ive heard they may well do).

PC World - Microsoft to Drop Xbox 360 Price This Week?

Analyst Micheal Pachter said on Monday that Microsoft will, in fact, reduce the price of the Xbox 360 tomorrow at the start of the company's E3 press briefing. He believes the $299 Core will drop to $249; the $399 Premium to drop to $349; and the newly released $479 Elite to drop to $399 in response to lower-than-expected sales of all three systems.

Seems worded similar to the PS3 price drop rumour when it was still a rumour so this is a good sign.
