Sony Finally Drops Bomb With DivX Announcement.

DivX, Inc. today revealed a partnership with Sony to integrate its video playback technology into PlayStation 3. While a consumer-targeted firmware update has not been dated, developers who update their SDKs to version 2.00 can already utilize the DivX decoder technology for use in their games. But who cares about games anymore? With DivX support enabled (hopefully in the near future) for PS3 owners, a lot of that juicy BitTorrent content you've compulsively horded on your basement PC can be effortlessly streamed upstairs to the console. Now if they'd just add Xvid support you could finally cut the cable bill altogether...

Shocking news today, and definitely a chance for PS3 owners to rejoice. However, rumors have quickly risen following this announcement that Microsoft will quickly follow suit and support DivX/XviD in the upcoming Fall Dashboard Update on Decemeber 2nd.

Little update on the situation for Xbox 360 owners:

DivX coming to Xbox 360 too - CVG.com

DivX CEO Kevin Hell had the following to say about the PS3 announcement then some words about the 360.

DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date.

There are more restrictions surrounding software on the Xbox 360, so the 360 Divx project is moving at a slower pace compared to the PlayStation 3.
