Sonys 'Home' delayed again

Sonys highly spoken of new online system for its PS3 console has been delayed for a second time.

Eurogamer said:
Sony has stretched its closed beta for PlayStation Home so it will continue throughout the summer, nudging the open testing back to autumn and final release sometime after that.

"We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today," said Kaz Hirai, Sony Entertainment overlord.

"Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PlayStation Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation tradition," he added.

PlayStation Home lets you make a little virtual avatar of yourself and potter around talking to other PS3 users online.

You get to buy a house, too, and display rewards earned from games there, as well as pictures and videos and music and mini-games and all sorts.

XBox 370 is gonna be out before Sony gets this thing sorted, by the looks of it.

Re: Sonys 'Home' delayed again

No skin off my nose, fortunately. I'm not really in any race to pick up a PS3 and I can experience 'Home' every day in my actual home. I mean, if I want to decorate or speak with my neighbours - I can do that right now. I don't need a PS3, that apparently runs up a fortune in electricity bills, to help me go about that.

Yeah everything its saying it can do i dont need a virtual self to do as i can do it myself.

Re: Sonys 'Home' delayed again

This whole Home thing, still seems like a waste of time to me. I mean, if you really want to experience Home right now. Then simply put the controller down, and decorate your house, call your friends up and meet them somewhere, or go walk outside to wherever.

Or, just go and play that Second Life game (for free).

Re: Sonys 'Home' delayed again

Ahh...delaying Paedophile Central - sorry, "Home" - is no great loss to the PS3. It'd be the one decent thing Sony manage if they never actually release this phenomenal waste of time.

According to Kaz Hirai this is the system they are putting all their online faith into and this IS their competition for Xbox Live.

Re: Sonys 'Home' delayed again

Then they are being stupid. To put their all into something so pointless is retarded, in my opinion. They've already shown that delaying everything just annoys people rather than whetting their appetites and the only people who will use this Home nonsense are those who are either about 12 years old, dirty old men or Sims addicts who just can't get enough of that virtual stuff.

Competition for XBOX Live? They need to do better than that - Live players don't sit there chatting to each other out of game; they talk/yell/joke/insult whilst throwing grenades, firing cannons and shooting each other in the face...it's not about sitting on some virtual sofa, drinking virtual coffee and boring the crap out of other people with the virtual trophy room. If you have a console, you don't need to waste time in some bizarre world full of avatars - you want to be busy playing the games you have been waiting to play all day or having a match with a team of friends from all over the world.

Just my opinion, of course - I've been watching the developments of Home for some time now and it really is a load of old tat that could have been better spent on making the PS3 the console perfection that people expected and deserved...instead they churn out some half-assed console (for here, anyway) with no decent games and delays for all the games people actually want. Looks like they're hoping Home will bail them out - and maybe it will be popular for a while with the young teens and paedophiles, but it won't compare to Live and they should have thought of a better way of competing...

/opinionated and probably grossly biased rant :D

Re: Sonys 'Home' delayed again

:noexpression: Hm.. I completely agree, Sharon.

Sony promised their consumers that PSN would offer everything Xbox Live does, but for FREE. People who complain about $50 for Live, well hey.. You get what you paid for, and in the PS3's case ... well, the cobwebs speak for themselves.

They've now wasted years trying to create what is nothing more than Second Life, without all the user-created junk on a console... and this is just the BETA we're waiting for! Unless there are some cheap companies out there willing to advertise throughout the billboards and building signs of Home (... Verizon and McDonald's)... then I don't see how they'll make much money from this.

They could've been doing more productive things with all that time, like adding content to PSN that people might actually care about. More games, demos, coverage, anything.. At least XBL has something new to report every day, and keeps it's community up-to-date through Inside Xbox. I'd love to see all of THAT on the PSN, for free... of course, I do recall people having to pay for various content on PSN anyway. Yeah, ... you get what you paid for.

We'll see how this "Home" plays out, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

They did update PSN, it now looks better and has easier navigation.

Your right though they need content thats the main thing, and not to have to wait weeks after Xbox Live gets things and such. Like you said again though you get what you pay for.

With the price you pay for the damn console, they should at least give you a half decent online experience. The guys at Sony must be on crack for them not to realize that this home thing is going to flop.

Re: Sonys 'Home' delayed again

my mate bought a PSP and it did not work so he sent it away to Sony to get it fixed he had to pay £50 for the repaires Sony must be getting desprate his Xbox 360 got rings of death and they repaired it for free
