Square Enix's Verdict On PS3

Here is the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest creators verdict on Sonys PS3 and what they believe needs to be done.

CVG said:
Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has delivered his verdict on the differing messages that the three platform holders are sending out about their consoles, while rebuffing accusations that the company relies too heavily on established franchises.

Speaking to CNet Japan (translated by Kotaku), Wada suggested that only Microsoft is putting the message out to consumers that its next-gen console, Xbox 360, is a games machine. He said that consumers are viewing the Wii as a plaything, while Sony is leaving the public confused as to whether its PS3 is a media-hub or a games console.

The Wii is the antithesis of the Xbox 360. It's strictly for hardcore gamers. The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii. People who buy the 360 really like games," he said. "I think the current trend is that most people aren't buying the Wii as a game machine, but as a toy... It seems that Sony isn't sure what it wants to do. Is it making high-end electronics or a game console for gamers? I want them to clearly define their console.

Wada also went on to note that Square Enix has more aces up its sleeve than just new iterations and remakes of its RGP franchises Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

It's not that we are not investing in new franchises. It's necessary to do new games, franchises and remakes. With remakes, we're trying to expand the outlook of that world. If you look at our profits, franchises are 60 percent of our business, while new IPs are 40 percent.

There's a misconception that we rely only on Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, while these titles only make half of our business. It's just that people keep asking for new installments."

Re: Square Enix's Verdict On PS3

That's an interesting take on the three consoles

Gaming machine
Toy
High end electronic device that plays games

A bunch of Wii suddenly became availably on Tuesday on I thought to my self, erroneously, why would I spend $250 to play tennis. Then I realized all the ads focus mostly on the people playing the games and not much on the games they're playing.

Then I thought of the PS3 ad where it morphs into an electronics version of John Carpenter's "The Thing" There have been a lot more commercials centered around the games for the PS3 lately. I have particularly noticed the Assassin's Creed ones, an obvious bias on my part.

Funny thing is I don't remember seeing many 360 commercials on TV but the one I did see showed a bunch of people gathering around a high def TV playing some games. They showed some gaming and some of the gamers and at the end, I think, they showed the boxes of Mass Effect, Halo 3 and BioShock. Interestingly all of those are exclusive to the 360 but Assassin's Creed is not Exclusive to the PS3 as we well know.

Has anyone seen any commercials for Mario Galaxy. That still remains the top selling game for all consoles.

Re: Square Enix's Verdict On PS3

The Wii is a party utility!

Nothing's like a couple of drunk guys/gals trying to hit some virtual ball in Wii Sports. Hilariousness. The Wii sorta falls under the same category as them Dance Dance Revolution thingies.
