The importance of family

Listening to the few interviews, and reading the countless articles regarding Fable 2, I keep coming across talk of families. The only concern I have is whether or not the family will be useful, or if it's just being publicized because it makes the game sound closer to real life.

In Fable, your wife, other than recognizing the Hero as her husband, did very little to distinguish herself from every other NPC, and I can't help but relate back to this when I hear all this talk about families.

Fair enough, the dog may actually be an interesting feature given that (until its unavoidable death) it will accompany the Hero everywhere, and serve a multitude of uses, but I have a feeling that the 'Family' feature will have little importance other than a nicely polished, but nonetheless pointless feature.

I've heard talk about your children idolizing you, and changing based on the player's character alignment and actions, but I'm curious to see whether this will serve any actual use within the game.

Anyone else heard anything different that might disprove my cynicism?

Re: The importance of family

So far all we know is your family is an imporant part of the game.

Re: The importance of family

Well I always wanted a kid, and more interaction with my family in the original fable so I think family is a good thing. :D

Re: The importance of family

Yeah, plus it will definitely help with the emotion of love. It will be interesting, especially since you'll have to devote yourselves to raising your kids and all, a whole new experience.

Re: The importance of family

Yeah but haveing a family is an weakness that can be exposed like emotions.

Re: The importance of family

PM did mention that baddies might go through your family to get to you...

Maybe you could train them to protect themselves in live melee(sp?) or magic or something. That could be cool, but yes also troublesome.:hmm:

Re: The importance of family

^ Yeah but what would happen if they mess up a spell? or drop there weapon?

Re: The importance of family

The question still remains, how much will you actually be involved in the life of your family, or is it a case of maybe seeing them if you make an effort when you eventually return to whatever city state they live in?
If it's the latter and not the former, then how involved can you possibly be in the development of the family, or does this just mean that in order to develop this facet of the game, an actual effort to visit them will be required?

Re: The importance of family

i remember PM saying that the dog would be killed... or at least hinted at it to get the true cruelness of the big bad guy of the game... but then i think i remember hearing him say that the dog could come back or that the dog would just be captured... idk... but the family thing i think one of the main things PM and Lionhead are gunna work on for the next year until fable 2 is released.... he has the world set the story set and the combat set with a few glitches in them all and graphic arent up to where he wants them... so the main thing left that i see is him working on the family aspect as he hasnt talked in detail about that as much as combat or the dog

Re: The importance of family

I haven't decided whether I should start a family. But if I did, I can't wait for a little Tex. Now THAT kid will have spunk

It would be realistic if your family would be caught up between the fight. And interesting.

You never HAVE to visit your family, because hey...chances are you're either destroying or saving the world. But still, you gotta go back to the wife and kids.

Re: The importance of family

It really depends on the depth if its like Fable It will quickly ware off and be nothing but a few select actions and dialogs
If I had a kid we would so go visit the bordello when hes like 16
and we would terrorize the traders kids
and lock the good heros child in a well or something
