Rose wished to live in the castle and it didn't work. Weird how the dog appeared at your house? Maybe your character wished for the dog instead and since you're the hero it used your wish. Makes sense as well since Lucien said "What shocked me was what you were able to use it." And since you were the hero, you could use it. Basically saying, if you didn't wish for the dog and went to the castle, would Rose have been shot in Castle Fairfax? Maybe you would have lived somewhere far away.

I'm not sure this was obvious or not but I just now realised it after playing the game since December

Never thought of that, but maybe her spirit haunts the castle? Therefore, she DOES live in a castle.

I thought that Rose's wish didn't come true at all. My hero probably turned the handle while she made the actual wish which is why it activated. I figured that Lucien heard about Murgo's having an Old Kingdom artifact and had people watching to find out if bought/by whom as he didn't know it had been used til talking with Rose. Going to the castle was not a wish come true.

The dog has always been tied to Theresa for me. It seems like a witch's familiar, where it is like her agent or something since when you fall, she is there with the dog who (unlike with the guard) it doesn't bark at, but goes to.
