So It's finally here, I have but a couple months to get ready for college, making a transcript right now. I don't really want to go, I really just want to join the work force and get my own apartment and stuff, but I feel obligated to go to college. The problem with going to college is: I am lazy, I would be in college loan debt, I'd be crammed with college and work, I'd have to stay at home for four years, and I wouldn't be studying anything that can bring in money. The problem with not going is: I have to start looking for an apartment, try to get a full time job, and probably have to jump right into not being cozy, plus disappointing my folks. Problem with the full time job part is: I work at a restaurant that serves booze, I can't be a waiter until I am 20 and a day old. So I would have to abandon my co-workers and a job that I love to go get a crappy job at a corporately owned store/factory.

Personal army, decide for me.

Part of college is growing up. When I graduated high school I wasn't prepared to put much effort into school either, but universities have a way of easing you into things. The freshman level courses are not too far off from high school difficulty. It's when you choose your major that things get more advanced and difficult.

Money? Dear god don't major in something for money. It's the worst thing you could do. My major is great in that the unemployment rate isn't terribly high and I get to do something I love. Of course the average income is a measly $20,000 a year, that doesn't mean I won't enjoy it.

My advice to you is this. If you think you need some time off before college, take a year off. It's very common for people to choose to do that and save up some money. It may also help if you don't think you're ready to commit to a college-level workload. You aren't a dumb guy, so college isn't above your ability. You should take advantage of the chance if you are able, especially if your alternative plans consist of living at home and working a regular job. There's another word for that: a dead end. A break is fine and dandy, but I wouldn't recommend anyone get into that situation without serious plans to move on to bigger and better things in the near future.

Even if you major in something ridiculous and inapplicable, it can lead you into a real career that's only remotely related. Of people who graduate with my major, roughly half of them end up doing something else like working for PR departments or teaching. Just having the degree opens tons of doors, not just in that particular line of work.

I would definitely go to college. You can always do all that real job stuff afterwards, but admittedly it is a four year wait. Unless your home life is unbearable, it's definitely worth staying at home and trying to save some money.

And like Cheez said, having a degree, no matter what it is, on your resume will show people at least that you're a hard worker and prepared to see things through. It will also give you valuable "life experience" which I've never found any real use for, but can help you out heaps when answering behavioural job interview questions.

Taking a year off is also a good idea. Best of both worlds (and kinda what I'll be doing this year). Be warned though, I have heard that people who do this could be tempted to not return to school, because they suddenly find out that they like having money.

In short: Go to college, son. You'll be better off in the long term.

Out of curiousity: what's the degree you're planning on maybe doing?

I went to college and left.. Different over here, since it's High School. Didn't like education and chose the wrong courses. Think carefully about what you want to do I guess. Look into it carefully before doing anything.

And trust me, working isn't that fun. Don't rush into it.

Philosophy, the second most useless major.

Yeah but you're thinking the way the system wants you to think. They want you to think that college/university is solely for getting a piece of paper so you can use it to make money. We should go back to Greek times, when universities were places for scholars and sophisticates to learn and discuss the inner workings of the universe.

**** capitalism. Philosophy is an awesome degree to do.

I didn't go to collage and it didn't do me any ham.
And yet how well you collage with ham, despite this obvious setback...

Ok, now all I can visualise is The Inbetweeners movie with Jay, the snorkel, goggles, interactive net porn and ham.

Take a year off if you really want to, but if you can go just go it big life experience and once you start working then that's what you are going to be doing for the rest of your life.

Not necessarily. Not likely, even.
