Training, eating?

Hey everybody :)

Since I'm going to have a LOT (24/7) of free time until fall, I've decided to get myself into shape again. I'm wondering what kinds of food to eat, and what kind of food to avoid?
I'm 169cm (5.5 feet) tall, and weigh 56.5kg (124.5 pounds).

I'm going to focus on endurance.
This is my training schedule, a lighter version of the Swedish army's "Training before applying for heavy service" (since I wanted in the paratroopers, but didn't realize until later and screwed up..):

Monday: Running - 3km (1.8 miles)
Tuesday: Running - 2km (1.2 miles)
Wednesday: Marching - 4.5km (2.7 miles), every second week with backpack.
Thursday: Various strength exercises.
Friday: Running - 1.5km (0.9 miles), every second week with backpack.

So, getting to the questions:
What should I eat? I want to gain weight, since I look like a stick.. But I don't want to look like some guy going to the gym 4 times a week!
Should I gain more weight before attempting this?
Is the balance between strength and endurance alright?

And ofcourse any other opinions on the matter, are more than welcome

Re: Training, eating?

Well, here is what I would do if I looked like a stick:
Keep in mind that I need to eat healthy, but not just salads
Have a small, balanced meal, with a protien, a vegetable, and a carbohydrate for dinner, oatmeal, eggs and toast, or low sugar cereal for breakfast, and a smaller, little less healthy version of the dinner plan for lunch, doesn't have to be the same foods though.
Eat fruit for desert.
drink diet soda or propel instead of regular soda
don't eat too much sugar
on two planned days every week, have a regular soda, doughnut, or something of similar size, sugar, and calories.
If you must have something icecream esque, eat frozen yogurt, it is still a little unhealthy, but is better for you than icecream.
eat meat!!!!
, nothing can replace it for your health, no matter what anyone says.
try to convert to fat free food on some things, except for milk, cheese and butter.
try to get farm fresh milk with the cream still in it, as it is better for you than processed milk, and don't take the cream out, just stir it in the milk.

before doing this get some fat on you, consume some fatenning food such as doughnuts, regular soda and candy, try to wiegh enough to still be fairly skinny, but not near close to being a stick. now, maybe, if you are 20-30 years of age, wiegh about 180 pounds before doing this.

Here are my health tips, hope you use them and they help.

Re: Training, eating?

I'm 17, and have been around this weight since.. I was 12?
But I could still easily run 3km (1.8 miles) without stopping before, no problem.
I was more worried about not getting the right kind of nutrition while doing this.
You think it'd be okay if I just eat enough?

You are right about the meat, and the fruit also =) Thanks.
But I got to disagree on the soda, ice cream and doughnuts... they all contain "bad" fat, and almost no (useful) energy... its better to just avoid them?

Re: Training, eating?

lol my diet is ****.

I say you can eat whatever you want so long as you maintain the energy level needed to burn it up. then again, Im just a pale twiggy gamer dork so............. I have no idea.

Well you can't do that cause then you are stuck as a twig, the reason I said most of those is because you need to gain a little bit so eat more junk food than you usually do, only for about a week or two, then, only 1 or two days a week, because without it, your body goes, what the hell?!?!?! Where is my fat and sugar, then basically tries to eat itself, which is of course, bad as hell. and if not a lot more sugar, then meats like pork chops and bacon, and just a the same amunt of sugar for the first few weeks, you need to have fat to gain muscle.

I dunno - probably. If not, you'll die. Or something.

Wow - I feel better now for helping. I am quite possibly the most helpful poster in this thread. You are most welcome.

it works for sumo wrestlers!!!

Definitely keep eating some fatty sugary stuff so your body doesn't get the shock of it's life, but also consider them a treat for working so hard, and only have it in moderation. definitely more meat, for the protien, so you can build that muscle. the more muscle you have, the faster you will burn the fat. eat plenty of carbs like rice (eat alot of it) and pasta (not so much). and eat the fruit and veges to your hearts and/or stomachs content.
take days off from training occasionally, because if you overdo it, your body will be more prone to sickness. you need to chill out, unwind, and when you're of legal age, have a beer or a bourbon, but avoid those nasty alco-pop-lolly-water-chick-drinks. way too much sugar.

I don't drink, and don't plan to :P Which I think is a good thing in this situation. It is, right..?

Re: Training, eating?

A little alcohol can be good for the system (especially red wine) but not something essential to live a healthy life. If you have no intention of drinking then don't bother starting.

You don't necessarily have to put on more fat, because muscle weighs more than fat. Don't exclude it from your diet, because your body needs it. Just watch the types of fats you eat. Avoid fats from deep fried food at all costs. Fish Oils are very good for you, Vegetable and Olive Oil are great, in moderation, Nuts are good too and the fats from dairy are essential. Any fat that is in a lean steak is fine, but try baking or grilling your meats rather than frying them.

Re: Training, eating?

Don`t eat white refined sugar, use brown instead. Also, pasta is not very good, "brown" flour is always better. It has something to do with different types of carbs...
Also, meat is good, honey is good.

You can also do endurance exercises with low weights. And if you want to build some muscles, use as heavy weight as possible.
I can`t remember anything else, but my two classmates are gym guys, so I`ve picked up something... Plus, a bodybuilder visited our school some time ago.

Noooooooo!!!! don't eat margarine, it is processed too much, and it is just the cannon grease they used in one of the big wars, which is an unappealing grey coor, then they add yellow die and salt!!!!, eat butter, it is fattening if you weat too much, but margarine is much worse, also note that I spent ours reading health books that all say the same thing about it, also, no powdered protiens, that includes myoplex and other protien drinks like it.
And yes most of the above people are right, except most of what angel says. eat brown rice instead of white rice, or at least use jasmine rice if you can't stand brown rice.
