TV-Links Gone for Good

tvlinks-crop.jpg

"TV Links, a Web site that provided links to hundreds of movies, documentaries, TV shows and cartoons hosted on streaming media sites such as Google Video and YouTube, has been raided by UK authorities. The site's operator was also arrested, The Guardian reports.

Even though the site has not hosted any pirated content, it was a thorn in the side of movie and TV studios, thanks to having links to newest movies and TV shows.

As the largest site of its kind, it showcased the power of user-driven Internet, with the site's visitors helping to keep links to content constantly updated."

Get out your hankies people and start crying now, because the website TV-Links.co.uk is officially gone for good.

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

that makes me sad :'(
I guess it's due to the different legalities of television and such in the UK versus here... :getlost:
I'm going to miss that site :(

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

The same happened to The Piratebay in sweden! Some people over at MPAA (Movie Picture Asociation of America) made a call to Thomas Bodström (swedish law-stuff-minister) and told him to take some cops and go fetch the TPB servers... and so they did! So Bodström actually broke the swedish constitution but he didnt get charged!

Anyway, the piratebay survived and it got a lot of media coverage so i dont think it will happen again.

Its just a matter of time before another site like this enters the internets..

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

Damn shame, that site was where i watched more or less everything and essentially didnt do anything illegal as they didnt host their own stuff. Where one falls another surfaces so expect more to open soon enough, that site was clearly the best though.

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

Its so annoying!

I just found out this morning when I sat down at the comp with a bowl of coco pops, ready to watch a random episode of a random show
(as you do in the holidays)

but oh well.
Theres always joox.net *rolls eyes*

also if anyone doesn't know of anywhere else you can watch stuff
(as TV-links was really the only one I knew of)
theres a fair few links to simialar types of sites on OVGuide - Online Video Guide. The Online Video Guide.

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

Not to mention Stage6 has some good stuff. :D

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

This is so much ****ing bull****! Now I have to start renting movies again... (90% of the links didn't work on that site anyway, but I'm still going to miss it.)

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

Found out the grounds for the arrest of the guy in charge - it was done under section 92 of the trademark act on suspicion of supplying property with a registered trademark, without permission. He's not been charged though and has been released pending further investigation - thing is, the trademark act doesn't really seem to apply in this case as TV Links has only been showing people where to find copyrighted material via links - it hasn't actually hosted anything directly.

It looks like the authorities don't have much of a leg to stand on but there are (somewhat crazy) fears that this could begin something of a crackdown on ANYONE linking to material on the internet which isn't their own or is without the express permission of the other party. Whilst this is very unlikely to be the case seeing as the internet is kind of based on the whole linking idea, it could be interesting to see if TV Links are pinned with something and then other sites follow suit...:hmm:

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

I dont think anything will come of it and it will be another case of giving media to sites like this and more opening up.

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

Mm, first Youtube, then Dailymotion, and now TV-Links.. Oh well, like Sephiroxas mentioned, there's always Stage 6 (DivX) as well as Veoh, so not so much a complete loss.

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

If linking to Trademarked material is found to be illegal then say goodbye to search engines. In other words there's now way it will happen. If they couldn't bust YouTube TV.Links is safe I think.

Not really, i mean.. You won't find any complete episodes of TV Shows on Youtube anymore, except for Japanese Subs of Anime shows. Everynight, Youtube deletes hundreds of copyrighted videos, trying to make their effort towards preventing illegal presentations of copyrighted material.

Same goes for Dailymotion (Youtube's cousin).

Even though the guy is fine now (though sometimes the law can be crooked), I don't think TV-Links will be coming back. I mean, TV-Links is really no different than saying "Hey, go down that way so you can illegally watch television programming for free".

Re: TV-Links Gone for Good

Could be they are charged as an accessory to a crime. But they would have to pull them into court with the site hosting the files.
