UK Games Industry Tax Breaks Were Sabotaged by Global Publisher
A tax relief would be quite nice. If only other nations did this.According to a report from games industry site Develop, it transpires that a large global games publisher put pressure on the UK government and trade associations to halt plans for proposed tax breaks.
The previous Labour government had announced plans to introduce tax relief for the games industry, which were scrapped by the new Liberal/Conservative government earlier this week.
Where most UK studios widely supported the bid for tax breaks, one publisher asserted its "own international influence and power" to tip the scales in its favour, as the unnamed firm stated that game tax relief would have created "an unfair advantage over other nations."
"Insiders tell us that the publisher spoke to well-placed parliament allies to dissuade any legislative measures," says the article on Develop who declared the move from the well-known publisher, "scandalous".
"TIGA has campaigned rigorously for two years for Games Tax Relief,” CEO Richard Wilson told the site, adding "We will not give up and we ask publishers to join us."
