Vegans and life preservers

So through totally legal means I watched the latest South Park episode. It featured a vegan family who all were wearing life preservers.

Is there some American joke/stereotype about vegans and life preservers or what? I didn't get it... :ermm:

I'm waiting until all the episodes are up on south park studios to see the rest of season 15, but I would assume the joke is that vegans think they are preserving the lives of animals by not eating any products that come from them.

I would too, if not for the b.s rule that us Swedes are not allowed to watch any of the latest episodes. The latest one we're allowed on their official site is like four months old!

Screw that, I'm legally acquiring the latest episodes the day they air in the US of A.
