It's an extremely nice residence, has some goodies in it such as chests and a gargoyle It also helps you unlock a certain achievement. Furthermore, sleeping in the castle will unlock a special quest which will lead you to a special item. So yes, buy it.

once you buy Fairfax Mansion, when you use the drawers or the cupboards, you either find bags of 1000-2500GP or diamonds.

The mansion has a battle attached to it, besides all the goodies in it. Don't move a spouse in there the first night unless, you want them killed.

I suppose it's a possibility, but my wife survived the raid just fine; I found it a welcome challenge to defend the family.

No she just knew how to stand back from people when they are sword fighting. Plus when the Butler came in the room and told me I ran and blocked the door with my body so that my wife couldn't get out of the bedroom and the bandits couldn't get in.

I think it also happened that I had not been sleeping in the bed; I'd had sex with my wife so she was right beside me when I woke up. Still, remember that there IS a chance she will die, and if that's unbearable then just do the quest without her. It does make for a more interesting challenge to try to protect her though >_>
