What make a game "Next Gen"?

I was looking for more of the qualities. Some of the game released for the 360, PS3 or Wii could have been release for earlies consoles I'm sure.

Well, the most important to alot of people must be graphics, seeing that if the graphics are not "cutting edge" then it doesn't cut out to be next-gen. I see next-gen as a way to open the mind to new possibilities in games. I see it as looking at a monster and going: "Oh ****ing ****! I **** my bloody pants!" or characters with hands that don't look like their fingers were glued together. i see it where you don't just hop from a building, you backflip, kick jump and screw that air like it was your first whore. Graphics, depth, charcateristics...those aren't all required for next gen, but they are recommended. "Next gen" just means "new possibilities".

I would agree with that, GFX improve year after year and are always required and expected for next gen titles. However in my eyes the games that define 'Next Gen' are games that attempt something different or something thats not been tried before. Some games like Halo 3 with the 4 player co-op xbox live, that will be its defining feature and what separates it from all other shooters. Bioshocks GFX, physics, and the possibilities and different ways to approach situations and with all the different things to do in the game and ways of doing them. Mass Effect because no RPG has attempted its style of dialog and speech parts and immersion with the AI and just everything everyone is so excited about for it. Then theirs Assassins Creed with its huge amount of freedom, and crowd interaction and whole style hasnt been attempted by titles before.

I could name other titles such as Star Wars Force Unleashed etc but this post is already long enough :lol:

Don't forget Fable 2, first game I know of to have a "real" dog as an ally and the fact you can impregnate...or get pregnant and have little ****ing munchkins who won't leave you the hell alone! They'll come up to you wanting to play, but you just slew a troll 3x your size and need some rest. They keep screaming and the *****-wife is nagging about how you never spend time with the kids all the while you wished to turn back time and never save her from the evil cluthes of some tyrrant. In the end your sent to jail for murdering your wife via battleaxe to the head and the kids are freaking out cuase mommy's head split open and oozed all over.

Yeah, you could never do THAT in any other game.

Yeah, thats true and its the first game to attempt it in such a fashion. I didnt mention it as not much is known yet about the other features etc and didnt seem fair to throw it in next to those titles yet with so little known.

Sounds more like a life sim of everyday stuff to me, but ive never seen most of that confirmed :lol:

ummm... where does it say you can do that in Fable 2?
I didn't hear them say you could or couldn't kill your wives... I know you could in Fable, but with the ability to impregnate your wife in Fable 2, that kind of changes things...

Yeah, pretty much the everday routine...well except for the battleaxe to the head which was a dream I had. Oh sweet dreams taunt me so...but I must resist as those axes aren't cheap and I'd rather not spend the rest of my life experiencing life from a "special" angle.

Err, that post was mostly a joke, you know haha, hehe, hoho. But whatever, still funny.

Some of the things I was thinking about are AI, Free roam, a totally interactive environment and of course online play as well as the quality of the graphics and the depth.

What prompted this was playing Overlord which is not freeroam (it wouldn't make sense for it to be) I was thinking however that the graphics are very good and the AI of the minions aren't half bad. It doesn't have that much depth though.

All in all it's a wickedly fun game. That being said it has some "Next Gen" qualities and some not. So I made this post to see what you all thought qualities you could use to evaluate how Next Gen a game are.

So far I have (including what I put in this thread
  • Highest Quality of Graphics
  • Depth of the game
  • AI
  • Freeroam
  • Interactive environment
  • Online play
A game doesn't have to have all these qualities to be considered Next Gen in my mind but having these in the game would increase the Next Gen quality of the game.
(if the are indeed the measures of a Next Gen game)
Did I miss anything? Should I drop anything?

Innnovative (sp?) gameplay, possibilities, combining multiple genres in one game. Stuff like that.
Just pumping graphics isn`t next-gen, it`s improving old.
For example, I find Wii the most next-gen, because it introduces something new.
Ah, everything is said already and I`m out of words.

well, I don't know if you'd count this under any of the ones you mentioned, but for me a big part is replayability... and I don't mean just playing it again, I mean playing it again and having it be different, so that I really have incentive to play again, like missions that have various ways to be completed, or have different paths with different outcomes, etc... that kind of thing should be a must with next gen, just cause ultra linear plots and methods don't seem very realistic and we shouldn't have to put up with them anymore

That's a damn good point there Hex. For everyone to truly enjoy a game, is to play it over again, and always find something new. That's the one thing about the Elderscrolls games that I love so much, its not always the same game. And though Fable attempted this, in the end it was still the same, with maybe just a few sidetracks. Hopefully, Lord Molyneux will in the end put some thought into splitting storylines of either good and evil or something or other.

unfortunately, he has already stated that he will not... and that will always be something that makes Fable and Fable 2 come short for me of being a really great game...
he said that he doesn't want people to spend too much time weighing decisions rather than going with their gut or feeling like they missed something or that they made the 'wrong' choice, so he's not having any branching storylines, it will be just like the first game in that no matter what you do, nothing really changes as far as the main story... and that's just disappointing :(

I think Overlord will be the same. I mean you have a choice in the game be Evil or be Really Evil :devil: But I haven't noticed any effects of my choices except for the whining of the people of spree and a change in the castle when I picked Velvet. In other words cosmetic changes.
