When is it proper to use "got"

I've been thinking about that word and I realized it doesn't sound proper to me ever.

"I've got a soda" wrong sounding
"I got a soda" still wrong sounding
"I got to go"

yeah can you guys tell me the exact proper times and use of this word or else I'm never going to use it in my vocabulary.

Re: When is it proper to use "got"

I've got to go.
I got a soda.

But I could be wrong.

Re: When is it proper to use "got"

I've means I have.

So I've got a soda is I have got a soda.

It's stiff English if you know what I mean, something that a foreigner learning English would say.

I've got to go :)
I've got a letter :)
I got a toothbrush :(

Got tends to be used in preterite tense, such as

I got some candy floss at the theme park.
I got a few bottles down at the theme park game.

But you could also say

I bought some candy floss at the theme park.
I knocked a few bottles down at the game-stall.

The English language is versatile, say what you want as long as it is competent.

Re: When is it proper to use "got"

I have got is the correct way. In the course of time the have has been dropped. It's not correct english to say I got or whatever.

That being said, who really cares?

"I have a soda" sounds nice, just scrap "got". I have the same problem with "the" - I always have a feeling I use it too much.

Because the word "the" is the most used word in the English language.

^I hate doing papers and seeing "the" everywhere garsh
