Windows Live Messenger 2011

Has anyone downloaded it yet? What are your opinions on it?

Personally I hate it but I hated Msn2010 when it first came out too. I just want to make the "compact view" permanent so I don't have to redo it every time I open msn and then I'll be a happy bunny.

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

Thanks for telling me. Downloading now ill update this post when ive used it for a day :)

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

Didn't even know it existed, I'll probably check it out but I'm fine with the original WLM.

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

I only found out because I have FileHippo, it searches for updates for all of your programs at start-up.

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

I've just downloaded and installed it. So far I do like it in overall, but not the main Windows Live Messenger window. Too much crap in it that's simply unnecessary in my case.

Nice addition to the "inline status" on your taskbar, though (see picture).

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

Yeah I like the status thing too. To change the main messenger window, press the little grey book-looking button near the top right of the window.

It's what I spoke about in the first post, I want it to be like a toggle-permanent thing but it resets when you log back into windows.

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

I dont like it you hover over a name for a second and big boxes come up bleh!

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

Downloaded it last night and tried it out this morning, takes a little bit of getting used to but I like some of the new features, like being able to "appear offline" to certain people as opposed to blocking them. The result of sharing a YouTube link with someone was, rather surpising and gave me a bit of a scare.. Azer.

I don't like the new default emoticons. They're quite bad looking, I want the old yellow MSN emoticons back. :(

It got on my nerves as well, but quickly found a way to get rid of it.

You can permanently disable it by going to:

Tools > Options... > Sign In

Then uncheck the box that says "Open the main window when Messenger signs in".

Wouldn't that just be the exact same thing?

Not exactly, signing in as Offline I can then pick who I want to see me, rather than blocking a large list of people one at a time then unblocking them again.

Edit: post-jumped by Droded and Gik.

That was available in previous versions too, as far as I am aware. At least, in Windows Live Messenger ones, not Microsoft Windows Messenger (the very old ones). You can just appear as offline.

I wasn't aware of that. That's only superb! I'll go bother some friends with my favourite videos.

I disagree. Last time you used the default emoticon I wanted to add it, because I thought it was yours. But then I noticed I had it too. Only a good, positive thing, right?

Thanks a fortune. Blast it, that window was damn sure annoying. I believe I saw the option, but I thought they meant the entire contact window by naming it "main window". Thanks nonetheless.

Re: Windows Live Messenger 2011

Tell me more about this Youtube sharing thing please :P

Yeah, but in the original WLM you could only globally appear offline, and that was it. Plus, while appearing offline your Display Picture wouldn't update, custom emoticons wouldn't work, and you couldn't send files to other people (well, for me anyway).

This small change I find to be more convenient and don't have to block/unblock a bunch of people one at a time.

 I suppose, but these new ones remind me of Yahoo's emoticons, strange little buggers.

You're welcome, still some other things I don't know how to do on here though, like being able to have a custom background in conversation windows. They took away the background button.

Azer sent me a YouTube link in the convo window, I didn't have the window upfront when he did it and I was greeted by a very large Youtube video that took up 90% of the window. Convenient yet annoying at the same time since it didn't let me decide to accept the "View Together" option the first few times and just did it automatically, but it saves me the trouble of having yet another tab open in my browser.

.. perhaps I'll go and annoy Dark Drakan with it.
