Xbox360/Media Center Extender

I've been using xbox live for some time now, and generally don't have a problem getting online(except the last time i reformatted) but ever since then, i've had dramas trying to get the Extender function to work, and i can't even stream media through either. I use static IP settings, and as hard as i try, it just won't work. can anyone please give me examples of their settings. preferably XP media center. all i wanna do is watch some movies on a decent size screen.
Alternatively, could you recommend a decent free prog that converts avi to a DVD burnable format

Ive only used TVersity as a media streaming software and most settings were automatic and just had to select folders it read from.

I've been told i should use TVersity, and I think i will, Coz media center is a bit dodgey. Apparently there was something in the Windows Live OneCare update that blocked the Extender Utility.
