So, what, that's a good thing?

Speaking of cricket, I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you remember the 2010 Commonwealth Games and you remember that they were worried about terrorist attacks.

Do you remember if there were any specific threats, or if they ever threatened a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear attack?

Basically. We were doing kinda terribly recently and everyone's been saying it's because of his captaining. It's kinda unusual to have an ex captain still be in the team though, for us at least. India loves that ****.

I don't recall anything specific.

Wait, was this the one you said was always drinking and having massive hot tub orgies and whatnot?

I don't think there was anything. I spent thirty minutes looking and just found a bunch of rumor and innuendo.

No, that's the guy who should have been captain. He's been retired for several years now anyway. The only highlights of this guy's career is that he lost the Ashes three times. He hasn't been batting well (except in the last game he played, where he got 100 something), and his captaincy and on field behaviour have been under intense scrutiny.

People think that the only reason he was successful at all was because his predecessor was so good, and helped nurture so many great player's careers. When all the players of that era retired, our team was kinda left with not a lot to work with, and he hasn't come up with anything comparable.

Not that that's really his fault, but the public needed a scapegoat, and he seemed like the best fit.

I see.

Also, this is another one of those weird things. Our sports might HAVE captains, but they generally aren't that important. Baseball doesn't have them at all.

But from what you're describing, in cricket it's a job with real authority and such?

The captain is the one who makes all the in-game decisions. Where people field, who bats and who bowls, when to take the power play, when to take the new ball, etc.

But more than that, it's a leadership role. The younger players need to have a mentor kind of figure, and the captain usually fills that role, along with two or three other senior players.

Yeah, we don't really have anything that formal. I mean, older players presumably DO that, but it isn't some psuedo-official kinda thing.

And making decisions like you mentioned in the first paragraph would probably go to the managers or coaches or whathaveyou. Not that we have the last two, so far as I know.

Hell, in baseball and softball the ball gets replaced all the time. When it's hit out of play or gets dirty or whatever. The umpire has a bag full of balls. I guess you guys don't need it because the balls don't get hit as far.

This isn't exactly official either, but the captain is usually also the most experienced player on the field. Just works like that.

The coaches play a tiny tiny role in cricket. Pretty sure all they do is focus on developing the players and running training sessions etc.

First of all, the condition of the ball plays a much more important role in cricket. Swing is a huge part of bowling, and the ball needs to be in a certain condition for that to happen.

And our balls get hit way farther.

Wut?

Wut? Is right. Since when do your balls get hit way farther? I find that hard to believe.

Also, the condition of the ball matters in baseball, too, but it's generally something covered in the rules as "don't do it or we'll kill you dead and use your testicles to wrap a new ball around."

Farthest hit in baseball. Tell me.

Yeah, but we're the opposite.

I'm not entirely sure. Google gives a number of possible results, most of them more than 600 ft or between 500 and 600.

Well, yes, pretty much the exact opposite.
