Could This Be The Most Highly Anticipated Video Game This Decade?

The video game that arguably stole the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) showpiece event was Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

With development beginning in mid-2007, Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Deus Ex 3) will be the third game in the first-person role-playing game Deus Ex series, and a prequel to the original game.

The action role-playing game will be eventually released during early 2011 on Microsoft Windows, OnLive, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Developed by Eidos Montreal in co-production with Square Enix, the video game will be composed by composed by Michael McCann and designed by Jean-François Dugas on a re-engineered Crystal Tools engine.

Evidently a considerable large amount of time and money has been invested into the games development, which has already achieved success through the markets over-excitement for the latest trailer. Buoyed by the video games outstanding audio and cyberpunk/renaissance aesthetics its highly likely this video game could be the most highly anticipated game this decade.

Set in the year 2027, Human Revolution takes place 25 years before Deus Ex. Nanotechnological augmentations have yet to be developed and biomechanical augmentations are the current state of the art. The main character, Adam Jensen, is a private security officer with a company that specializes in these augmentations. After he witnesses a chilling attack on his company which leaves him horribly injured and forced to undergo augumentation to survive, “the conspiracy begins”.

The player will visit five metropoles during the course of the game, including Detroit, Shanghai and Montreal. In addition, the protagonist will have his own apartment where he may store his secrets and collected information. The events in the game will lead to the formation of UNATCO from the original game.

In the Deus Ex games, augmentations are body modifications that allow the user superhuman abilities. While augmentations in the first two games were nanotech, Human Revolution is set prior to both and instead features mechanical augmentations. These will be divided into four types: Combat, Stealth, Technology and Social. Consequently unlike in Deus Ex: Invisible War, weapons will fire distinct ammunition types instead of depleting a unified pool. They can also be upgraded to better suit the player. Every enemy squad will have an identifiable squad leader who will direct the team’s actions. If the leader is killed, the squad will fall into disarray. The enemy AI will also react to subtle player decisions, such as a change in behaviour or weapons, etc.

The game will also feature a contextual third person viewpoint when using the cover system, certain augmentations, or closeup instant-kill moves.

However despite the improvements, in a controversial departure from previous titles in the series, Human Revolution will use a regenerating health model. This change was made because the developers didn’t want players to get into a situation where they were unable to progress due to low health, and would be forced to “scrounge for med packs” ruining the flow of the game.

Nevertheless with at least 5 months to go before January 2011, Deus Ex’s excitement is likely to grow month by month with the further release of trailers and game information fermenting more anticipation, and its march towards the most highly anticipated video game this decade.

(Who's been saying this since it was announced in 2007 - me.)

Meh, the new trailers and stuff are putting me off it more and more. I would hate for it to turn out like the second. I'm loving the Blade Runner-esqueness of it, especially the giant city metropolises. I hope it doesn't get hyped up like the second though.

First was a masterpiece, sequel was mediocre. Hopefully this recaptures the feeling of the first and expands on it, if so then it could be really something special. That trailer is superb though i have to say.

i want to see what the graphics look like in the gameplay, the cutscenes in the trailer are simply breathtaking.

i've never played this series, barely heard of it in fact! i'll keep an eye on this one.
to those who are familiar with it, do you think this game will have an independent storyline?

because i would hate to have to play the first two to know what's going on.

... Meh. It's only 2010 so how can this be the most anticipated game of the decade?

Well, technically the new decade doesn't begin until 2011, but I wasn't anticipating this game. Trailer looks good, hopefully it'll be as good as the first entry.

From what's been announced, you won't need to have played the first two games. I would still recommend the first Deus Ex though.
Human Revolution is a prequel (set 25 years prior) to the first game, so if anythingm it will explain the situation in the first game.

Re: Could This Be The Most Highly Anticipated Video Game This Decade?

Invisible War wasnt a bad game but it felt a little dumbed down when compared to the first. Though it was on a console for the first time and not many titles back when it came out matched up to their PC counterparts and they were regularly 'dumbed down'. It got decent reviews and averaged a respectable 80 and 84 on Metacritic. But when compared to the original being named "Best PC Game of All Time" in PC Gamer's Top 100 and in a poll by PC Zone it was a frequent candidate for and winner of Game of the Year awards. Plus having an average of 92 on Metacritic it was going to be a really tough act to follow.

For those people who have never heard of the title (it was a sleeper hit that went under some peoples radar) here are the list of awards and accolades it holds:

  • Over 40 Game of the Year and/or best in its class awards in magazines and websites. This includes awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, IGN, GameSpy, PC Gamer, Computer Gaming World, and The Adrenaline Vault, among many others.
  • "Excellence in Game Design" and "Game Innovation Spotlight" at the 2000 Game Developers Choice Awards.
  • "Computer Innovation" and "Computer Action/Adventure" categories at the Interactive Achievement Awards.
  • Many Best Story accolades, including first prize in the 2006 Gamasutra "Quantum Leap" awards for storytelling in a video game.
  • Appeared in a number of greatest games of all time lists and hall of fame features, placing in the top thirty for most, and in the top ten for many.
  • Numerous appearances in IGN's 100 Greatest Games of All Time lists. GameSpy's Top 50 Games of All Time. 25 Most Memorable Games of the Past 5 Years, Hall of Fame numerous PC Gamer Top 50 PC Games lists, Yahoo! UK Video Games' 100 Greatest Computer Games of All Time, and in GameFAQs' Top 100 Games of All Time.
  • Named second best game of the decade by Gamasutra.
