Killing In The Name Of! UK Christmas Number One!
One hell of a Christmas number one.

It’s not exactly “Winter Wonderland,” but Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” has been crowned Britain’s Christmas Number One single. The annual contest, which honors the top song on the charts the week before Christmas, is usually dominated by poppier music. The Spice Girls won three years in a row in the ’90s; last year’s chart-topper was Alexandra Burke, a winner of the Simon Cowell talent show “The X Factor.” But this year a Rage fan named Jon Morter and his wife, Tracy, began a Facebook campaign to elevate the band’s politically-charged song — first released 17 years ago — into the lead chart position and unseat Cowell’s previous dominance.
“Killing” sold more than 500,000 copies for the week, edging out a cover of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” by latest “X Factor” winner Joe McElderry and breaking a British chart record for the most one-week download sales. Cowell originally criticized the campaign as “stupid” and “cynical,” but Morter told NME he received a good-luck call from the music mogul shortly before the winner was announced.
Rage Against the Machine issued a statement calling the victory the “Anarchy Christmas Miracle of 2009.” The members of Rage have long been politically active, and guitarist Tom Morello spoke to the Wall Street Journal earlier this year about his solo album, inspired in part by post-Katrina New Orleans. The band said it will make good on its promise to play a free UK concert if “Killing” was crowned the winner.
