I don't mean any offense to any of the religious folk here. My cousin recently converted to Mormonism at the age of 18 and is going off to study at the University of Utah (pretty much the Mormon state if you did not know).

It just boggles my mind that there are people out there who would blindly follow something even after finding things like this video. Scientology was still alive and kicking last I checked, and that South Park episode was nothing short of eye-opening to most of the general public.

Can't imagine being so obsessed with something that you just ignore facts or evidence that might shake your faith. I can respect acknowledging and accepting that they exist, but choosing to remain faithful despite them. It's when you just right out ignore it because you know that it'll burst your belief system.

For the record: no I have not shown this to my cousin. I'm just letting sleeping dogs lie on that one, since there are plenty of people in the family who are closer to him and would have spoken up if they felt like it was a mistake.
 
I laughed at the bit where he said his brother was Jesus.

But to be honest, it's only as insane as the rest of the religions out there - we're just more familiar to things like Christianity and Hinduism, so it doesn't seem as weird to us.
 
I've seen this cartoon before. There are a lot of batshit crazy beliefs within mormonism, some in this cartoon, and some not, but there are plenty of mormons who don't believe those sorts of things. I went to high school with a guy whose family was very active in the mormon church, and he very firmly believed in the tenets of mormonism. He was a nice guy, very book smart, always got a 4.0+ GPA, and went off to BYU. I used to talk to him a lot during cross country and track practice, sometimes about religion, and I could never imagine him believing something like this:

"Those who remained neutral in the battle were cursed to be born with black skin. This is the mormon explanation for the negro race."
 
I hate the mormons. Simply because they stole bike-riding from us.

Also: ''Here, the god of mormonism and his many wives through endless celestial sex produced billions of spirit children''. This guy is pimp.
 
It is not so much "bad" as it is "stupid". I mean, it is not Scientology which is both bad and stupid.

There are some wicked nasty things in there though, such as "Those who remained neutral were cursed to be born with black skin." The term curse would imply very negative thing.

It is good in the sense that mormon families tend to be much happier and try to spend time together. Kids in mormon families tend to be as you said; high achieving, athletic, nice, et cetera. Being mormon would be a bad thing if you had issues with their belief system and VERY crazy history. Besides, I don't know about you, but those guys that go around on bicycles and try to talk to you about why you should join their faith just plain get on my nerves.

Pretty much my doctrine all the way through high school, hanged around with muslims, christians, satanists/pagans etc (sometimes all at the same time.) We never let religious differences get in the way of a good schoolyard laugh.
 
I'm with Arseface up until the point where a person or organization starts using their beliefs to get in the way of somebody's rights and liberties, which the mormon church does when it comes to homosexuality and gay marriage. I mean, if you want to worship a god and think to yourself, "homosexuality is wrong, so I am not going to be gay," then that's fine, but you should just leave it at that. Once you start preventing people who are gay from having the same rights as everyone else, that's when you've crossed the line.

Well of course not. I just mentioned them because that's what the thread was about. There definitely have been groups that have done some other things that take away certain people's rights and liberties in the name of religion. For example, nazis thought that they were carrying out god's will when they killed 11 million people.
