70% of Activision's profits from non-console games
I thought this was interesting and would make good discussion since Sean and DD were talking about Activision not to long ago.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has said that weekly sales charts have little impact on the publishing giant because 70% of its profits come from non-console-based video games.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal (via Gamasutra), Kotick said he's not worried by the decline in disc-based game sales. "I care a lot less. It used to be, I would religiously look at weekly retail sell-through data, but it's a very small part of our business now," he said.
"Today, probably 70 percent of our operating profit comes from non-console-based video games. So, while you might see a month-to-month change or volatility against expectations, that doesn't really get us too concerned."
The 11.5 million World of Warcraft players paying a $15 monthly fee has much to do with that, although "non-console-based games" also counts for iPhone and PC games.
