A dumb question about shops

So i killed basically half of Oakvale and acquired their houses and businesses, but i think i have missed something. I haven't seen any rent of businesses. What's the point of a business, if you can't make rent off it?

It takes a couple game days for someone to occupy the places you buy and rent.
