I think there's a very good reason why no one can accurately predict the precise date of the end of the world - mass hysteria is never an attractive prospect
Besides, if it's gonna happen, it'll happen no matter what we do. The Mayans were pretty darned smart but they were not all-seeing and all-knowing. No one is.
