Acne Problem

So, since I'm bored and don't feel like doing homework or anything else particularly productive, I'mma go ahead and talk to you about my acne and see if anyone has any other solutions or maybe just reasons as to why it's there.

So, it probably started around 13...maybe 12 or even 14...I honestly can't remember, but around the time adolescent boys get acne...well, those of us who get acne in the first place.

It has lessened 7-5 years later but is still a prominent part of my facial features. I've grown to accept it is as something I can fix easily and I'm not going to go out of my way and pay 100 dollars for a prescription "cure." It's worse on my forehead but basically everywhere. It's not terrible, but it's there. I can put up pictures but...eh I mean, you can try to see it on Facebook but it's not that noticeable in pictures as much as real life.

Anyway, so I have a tendency to pop the really bad ones and have gotten used to the pain and come to enjoy it some of the time, unless they're particularly painful. I tend to wash my face (now) once a day and that seems to work better than everything else I've tried in the past years of dealing with it. These treatments being: Clearasil, Acne Free, Proactiv, Oxy, SeaBreeze, Differin, and an over-the-counter pill that made me hungry. I've used all these "solutions" for reasonable amounts of time (at least a few months) with little success. "Success" meaning that the acne would get worse after a few weeks and then get better, sometimes a little better than it was before the treatment, but usually not much clarity.

I have "Backne" and some chest pimples though those have lessened as well. I used to wash my face at least twice a day when someone at my work mentioned that "my face might be too clean" which made sense. So I only wash my face when I take a shower instead of at night also (I take morning showers). My parents tend to get pimples as well (they are reaching 50) and sometimes it can get bad for them too. (Genetics?)

Another thing, my face is oily, not dry. And when I used most of the medicines listed above, my face would become uncomfortably dry and sometimes chafe. I think my skin is sensitive. (When I was in the plays at school and they caked that stage make-up on, the tape that would hold the mic to my face tore off some skin when I took it off after the...2nd?...show).

I may have more, but that's it for now :) Any general knowledge or suggestions that my help me understand my b!tch of a face?

Re: Acne Problem

i buy really strong face wash stuff, just apply it when i'm in the shower. that way it's not out of my way... i'm in a position to do it every morning. i'm not sure what to tell you, other than find the product that works for you. i had some prescription stuff in the past which would seriously dehydrate my skin, and the solution to that was to apply less.

it's a hard thing to really give advice on, as everyones different in that department.

Re: Acne Problem

Acne isn't really a problem that goes away, although it really only peaks during adolescence. You will likely have to deal with it all your life, but not nearly as much as you do right now.

I find that most acne medications are useless, just use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). I prefer the stronger 91% rather than the normal 72% (warning: burns like hell!!). If you must use acne creams, make sure they contain benzoyl peroxide (sp) (at least 10%, many contain only 2% and that's worthless). Continue to was your face regularly and try not to touch it often. I find that shaving causes me to break out, so remember to use aftershave or rubbing alcohol. Remember that popping zits causes them to spread, so if you do it wash your face. This is what I do and it keeps my acne fairly minimal.

Wow, working in a drug store has finally had some use. :)

BTW, the key ingredient in most acne washes (Seabreeze, Oxy, etc.) is usually isopropyl alcohol. So just skip the BS and buy that and some cotton swabs, its way cheaper than the name brand acne washes and just as effective, if not more so.

Oh, also, all these things I've mentioned will dry out your skin. There isn't any way around that that I'm aware of.

Yeah, I know...I kind of realized that beforehand...but I gave it a shot anyway :)

But...yeah, thanks for the comments :)

Whenever I used SeaBreeze (assuming is just a label of the same alcohol) it never really did anything to affect my face...so I'm not sure if it's worth even going there. I mean, there was brown/dirt in the swab after I did it and it lessened the more often I used it, but my acne would stay the same.

Does anyone know of causes of acne other than dirt, oil, and stress? Someone told me that back acne is due to being allergic to something...does anyone know this to be true?

Re: Acne Problem

Get Pro-Active, when I was younger (about 15) I had some pretty horrible acne, especially around my forehead area as well. My parents got me the pro-active starter kit, within a month my acne was completely cleared up. I've heard it doesn't work for all people, but if you do decide to try it, make sure you use it properly as directed for the best results. I'm pretty sure you can get the starter kit fairly cheap from their website.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey, thats the stuff that helped me last year I think...

It works great.... Of course, after like 4 months I stopped using it and starting putting on a masque (that green stuff for those who dont know...) and havent had a break out since! :D

However putting on a masque for you would probably be a little....gay.

I suggest going with proactive and then switching to something else a little cheaper once the bad stuff clears up. It was cheap the first time I got it, but compared to most products it weighs in heavily on your pocket later.

I'm sorry to say that I said I already tried using this stuff

That's the one that I used the most and got some results...but not complete results...so I eventually stopped after a year or so.

You're right, it doesn't work for everyone, just like every other medication out there. :/...oh well

^ aren't they the ones who started the ad campaign with all of the celebrities they could find including lindsay lohan and that girl from heroes?

Yes...they got people who didn't need it at all and took bumpy skin and made it into "terrible acne" -_-

No no, you pour boiling water over your face to get rid of the impurities.

But cut it off first so it doesn't hurt.

Re: Acne Problem

Go to the doctors and ask for Tetralysal tablets and Duac gel.

The allergy thing appears to be true in my case. I used to have typical teen acne when I was younger, then it suddenly got really bad when I was 20. I later stopped eating dairy (for a completely unrelated reason) and it went away completely within a month. Looking back, I became a vegetarian around the time I turned 20, and I started eating a lot more dairy to compensate for not eating meat. I guess I had a dairy allergy my whole life and just never knew it. I've heard other people say the same thing about dairy making them break out, and I've also heard some people say sugar caused a probelm for them.

I wish...that sounds like a perfect solution, but alas, I would probably die :(

...what is that?

Hm...it sounds plausible. I do eat some sugar, but not a lot of it...My parents only ever get Diet soda and I only eat granola bars and Nutrigrain bars which don't have a lot of sugar. My diet is relatively good, other than the fact that I don't eat very routinely and I sometimes get fast food, but I don't do that every week...Also, breakfast isn't a meal I indulge in :(

I don't drink milk though, only because I don't particularly care for it...or cheese. Oh yeah, and those pesky Hot Pockets that I'll eat when there's nothing else I want to make for lunch or dinner.

Re: Acne Problem

I know everyone says this but just wash your face good.

When people hear that they just splash water on their face over the sink,
which is actually what I thought to do and nothing really improved but what I now do,
is get the water and splash it on your face lightly and rub it all in, get all over,
then get some more water and splash again and rub over those areas so it soaks
into the skin rather than just gliding off the surface of your skin. I also have
back acne and some chest acne too but I'm not sure how to solve those problems. Sorry.

Also there's stuff like pro active that is supposedly really good but it didn't help me.
Even Milk of Magnesia tends to work good, if you dab it on a cotton ball then start
to dab it on the areas which have acne it dries it up. But like cheez said,
everyone is different so what works for me may not work for you.

Re: Acne Problem

I'm kind of concerned that people isn't reading my post thoroughly. I know it's long, but reiterating things I've already mentioned doesn't help. I've already tried Proactiv (actual spelling of the product).
Note: this is not a personal attack to anyone, please don't take offensively :)

Anyway, yeah, I wash my face vigorously (I've said this in the OP also :/). Like, with a wash cloth and soap and rub it until my face is all read and everything. I'm sure someone will say that soap probably doesn't help too much and that I may be doing it too vigorously...I don't know :/

Re: Acne Problem

but if feels good when I rub it hard... >.> <.< ...I mean...ugh, you know what I mean >D
