Re: Any Dutch people around?

Well, I went the easy way and took Spanish, although my little brother is taking Dutch next year. From a German guy :P

Re: Any Dutch people around?

Try learning French. Unlike many other languages in Europe it doesn't share similar characteristics. It is very, very hard to learn.

It is totally alien! :alien:

Re: Any Dutch people around?

Dude, the easiest language in the world to learn is Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language).^_^

Yeah, you're right about the teacher... I've had English, German and French, and it was always the teacher who made the difference (hence my French is very bad ;)).

But ehm... can you also write Dutch ;)
Sorry OldBoy i cant write/speek Dutch, though im sure the language is quite similar (despite the grammer).

I'll be taking that this year for a full year, but if I need help I have resources.:P I've heard it's difficult, but it can be similar to spanish since it originates from Latin, as do a lot languages.

Anyways, I'm part-Dutch(I think). I should have a look at some family genealogy.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

Seeing as the language is derived from Dutch I guess it counts that I can speak a teeny bit of Afrikaans...not much though...our church pastor is South African and usually says what he really thinks of a person in Afrikaans so he can get away with it

I speak Spanish pretty well, some Urdu and a little Punjabi...I once had a French teacher from Liverpool - now THAT makes for some difficult learning

Wow you know some neat languages. Punjabi is one I've always been interested in. I guess partially because it sounded neat, but it never hurts to learn.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

Swearing in Punjabi is fun...not that I've ever done it, of course....

I don't know much of it, but I spent my entire life until last year living in what can only be described as mini-Pakistan so you kind of pick up on bits if you don't want your head kicked in at school...

Never had a white neighbour in my life until I moved to Staffordshire - it's so weird...

It does hurt to learn cause it hurts my brain. I am takeing 3 or 4 years of spanish.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

I'm of Dutch heritage, but I never payed attention to it... I'm much more into my Finnish heritage.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

Good job Spanish is not too hard to learn...I would have dissolved into brain goo had it been any harder...I'm not so good with languages...or learning...

Plus everyone in my family knows spanish so if i need help i will know who to ask. Speaking spanish looks hard cause i know people who speak it and they talk very fast.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

My School only teaches two languages, French and Spanish... I made the mistake of taking French. My French teacher could play the bearded lady at the carnival if she wanted to, she certainly has enough hair on her face...

Re: Any Dutch people around?

Spanish is something like the third fastest language or something...and then you've got all the regional variations depending on which part of Spain you are from...but reading it is pretty easy once you've got the hang of the various verbs...I can read it better than I can speak it but I'm not as good as I used to be as it's been about 10 years since I last had to speak it

Re: Any Dutch people around?

The thing is I can use Spanish far better than French because I live in California, I'm sure you know what I am hinting at...

Re: Any Dutch people around?

Both Spanish and French speaks very very fast - it's like a constant flow of words, without pause between the sentences.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

It sort of sucks because my school only offers Spanish and French, so I took French, although I would have preferred to take German, Portuguese, or even Gaelic since some schools offer that as a language course. Plus for the scholarship and degree I'm working towards, it requires a minimum of three years of one language. I hope it's going to be neat and rather enjoyable.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

I would've gone with German - but I hated that teacher sooo much. She was one of them women that won't accept that they are of the plumpier kind and insists on wearing smaller sized clothing - I swear, the button on her jeans looked so stressed that if it shot away it would kill someone.

Add to that she was of that characteristic "mean old bag lady"-sort of teacher stereotype.

Re: Any Dutch people around?

I started learning Romanian once but got fed up because I'd get muddled sometimes with Russian...my dad is learning Russian although he is one of those people for whom languages are only an issue if you don't have the balls to blatantly make it all up on the spot. If in doubt, speak rubbish in a firm and no-nonsense way...
